Job summary
We are seeking an enthusiastic, highly motivated and adaptable practitioner to join our dynamic cardiac services team in a unique dual-role position spanning both the Cardiothoracic Recovery Unit and the Cardiac Catheter Laboratory.

This rare opportunity offers the successful candidate the chance to develop and maintain expertise across the full patient journey, from advanced cardiac interventions within the catheter laboratory, through to the immediate post operative care of cardiothoracic, cardiology and general surgical patients.

The expectation is that you will work within Cardiothoracic Recovery and Cardiac Cath Labs, supported by undertaking an in-house training package that is personal to your developmental requirements. On completion of in-house training there will be a requirement to participate in the on-call rota.

Our shifts are between the hours of 08:00 to 20:00 Monday to Friday, with an on-call commitment for nights and weekends.

***Preference will be given to internal Trust staff, as well as 'Priority' and 'At Risk' status including NHS At Risk staff throughout Devon who are able to display recent relevant experience as dictated by the Person Specification.***

Main duties of the job
The successful candidate will be responsible for implementing, coordinating and delivering effective, high quality perioperative care, following a client-centred model of practice and ensuring the areas of work run smoothly and efficiently. Additionally, responsibilities will also include but not be limited to:
Cardiac Catheter Laboratory:
  • Supporting diagnostic and interventional cardiology procedures
  • Assisting with emergency and elective cases
  • Participating in an on-call service for Primary PCI and other urgent interventions
  • Working with cutting edge technology and evolving, dynamic cardiology procedures.
  • Admit patients pre-procedure and discharge day-case patients.

Cardiothoracic/Cath Lab Recovery Unit:
  • Delivering level 2 and level 3 post operative care to cardiothoracic and general surgical patients.
  • Managing complex patient needs following cardiac, thoracic, cath lab and a wide range of general surgery patients.
  • Working closely with surgeons, anaesthetists, intensivists and the wider multidisciplinary team.
  • Supporting patients through the critical early stages of recovery.
  • To carry out their duties within the guidelines of the NMC Code of Professional Conduct/HPC professional guidelines.
  • To contribute to the overall efficiency and development of the Post Anaesthetic Care Unit and Cath Lab service.

Job responsibilities
PRIMARY DUTIES & AREAS OF RESPONSIBILITY
  • Provide high quality care to patients and their families during the perioperative period.
  • Under the direction of the Recovery Team Leader, the post holder will be responsible for implementing, coordinating and delivering effective, high quality care for the patient during the perioperative period.
  • Work as part of a multidisciplinary team.
  • Following a period of preceptorship, take responsibility for the supervision of Health Care Assistants and other learners.
  • Reporting and documenting all relevant patient needs, communicating changes to other health professionals in the multidisciplinary team.
  • To carry out duties within the guidelines of the NMC Code of Professional Conduct/HPC professional guidelines.
  • To contribute to the overall efficiency and development of the theatre service.
  • No direct budgetary control but must be aware of effective use of resources and cost implications.
  • Act as Practitioner in charge, in the absence of the Team Leader ensuring efficient allocation of staff and resources.
  • Demonstrate a commitment to evidence-based practice and clinical excellence and play an active role in the introduction of this evidence to improve patient centred care.

Person Specification
Knowledge & Experience
Essential
  • Registered with NMC/HPC.
Desirable
  • Proven competence in anaesthetics, scrub or recovery.
  • Proven ability to demonstrate managerial or leadership potential.

Qualifications
Essential
  • Diploma/Degree in related Healthcare subject or demonstrable equivalent experience.
  • Proven evidence of recent CPD.
  • Proven knowledge of and ability to apply evidence-based practice to patient care.
Desirable
  • Accredited specialist training.
  • Mentorship qualification.

Aptitude & Abilities
Essential
  • Demonstrable proven ability to assess, plan, implement and evaluate clinical care and act accordingly.
  • Effective influencing skills.
  • Effective verbal and non-verbal communication skills.
Desirable
  • Demonstrate awareness of financial constraints.
  • Methodical and organised.
