Job summary
To provide a clinical role within Respiratory Physiology at Plymouth Hospitals NHS trust. Working at the CDC/ Derriford and Dartmoor building.

To plan, undertake and perform simple/ specialist, and highly complex diagnostic assessments in accordance with ARTP/BTS guidelines

To provide a highly specialist technical service which contributes to the diagnosis, management and further treatment of patients.

The post holder will prioritise demands, accommodate unplanned events and work without supervision.

***Preference will be given to internal Trust staff, as well as 'Priority' and 'At Risk' status including NHS At Risk staff throughout Devon who are able to display recent relevant experience as dictated by the Person Specification.***

Main duties of the job
To deliver Lung Function & Sleep Service to users from appropriate authorised referrals, performing a range of diagnostic tests, presenting results back to the referrer with appropriate comments or report and problem solving.

To support the Senior Specialist Physiologists in developing the service.

To provide educational aspects of clinical physiology within PHT including delivery of education to medical and non-medical members of the multi-disciplinary.

Using a range of highly specialist equipment.

Job responsibilities

• To plan, undertake and perform simple, specialist, complex and highly complex diagnostic assessments in accordance with ARTP/BTS guidelines.
• Spirometry, peak flow rates, flow/volume loops
• Gas transfer
• Static lung volumes
• Reversibility of airways obstruction with bronchodilators
• Field exercise tests (6MWT)
• Overnight sleep apnoea screening
• Arterial blood gas performance and analysis
• Exhaled and nasal nitric oxide
• Bronchial provocation tests for the diagnosis of asthma/ bronchial hyper-responsiveness (Mannitol)
• Respiratory muscle assessment
• CPAP assessment and provision.
• Hypoxic challenge
• Pulmonary shunt assessments
• Full cardio-pulmonary exercise tests (CPET)
• Respiratory/ Multi channel sleep studies.
• Production of reports
• Verbal and written interpretation to referring medical team and other professionals where appropriate for simple and specialist assessments.
• As a minimum be trained in Basic Life Support.

Person Specification
Qualifications
Essential

• Undergraduate degree in clinical physiology or Practitioner Training Programme (PTP) qualification or equivalent science related subject.
• Professional Exams
• ARTP Parts I & II

Knowledge and Experience
Essential

• Thorough proven knowledge of Respiratory and Sleep Physiology
• A wide range of abilities in performing and reporting lung function tests & sleep monitoring.
• Demonstrable experience of working in respiratory physiology

Aptitude & Abilities
Essential

• The ability to work effectively as part of a team using individual initiative.
• The ability to integrate quickly into the lung function department.
• Good interpersonal skills.
