Job summaryThe basic salary is £54,499 per annum. Additional allowances will be paid based on rostered hours and the frequency of your participation on the rota. The Trust is compliant with the European Working Time Directive.
This is a Trust CT1-2 equivalent grade post in General Surgery for 1 year.
The appointee will participate in a 1:10 on call rota. The on call covers emergency General Surgery and Urology patients and shifts include long days (both weekdays and weekends) 08:00-21:00, night shifts (20:00-09:00), and a short day on Saturday to assist with discharges (08:00-13:00). The on call is led by a Consultant of the week, with middle grade and FY1.
Standard days (08:00-17:00) are ward based on a rota with FY1/2 to provide ongoing care to General Surgery inpatients. All grades of resident doctor are encouraged to attend theatre or clinic whenever workload allows.
Main duties of the jobThe duties of the post will include:
- Standard day shifts (ward cover) - 08:00-17:00
- Long day on call shifts - 08:00-21:00
- Saturday short day shifts - 08:00-13:00
- Night shifts - 20:00-09:00
On Call Commitment: 1:10- covering General Surgery and Urology emergency admissions and ward patients. There is an hour built in at the beginning and end of on call shifts for robust handover.
Handovers - daily handover of patients at 08:00 (led by consultant and an excellent learning opportunity), usually 17:00 and 20:00 for change of shift.
F2/CT responsible for ensuring admissions patient list kept up to date.
Participation in the rota providing care to the patients on the surgical wards
SHO grade doctors are encouraged to attend theatre sessions to develop surgical skills. It is also of benefit to attend clinics to develop outpatient skills.

There is a well-established educational programme with alternate week registrar led surgical skills/teaching/SIM and morbidity and mortality meetings attended by the consultants.
All doctors are assigned an Educational/Clinical Supervisor and are encouraged to keep a portfolio. Advice on career planning is available, as is study leave for appropriate courses.
Person SpecificationExperience/ QualificationsEssential- Basic medical degree
- Postgraduate qualification or appropriate specialist qualification
- Full GMC Registration with a licence to practice
- Advanced Life Support Certificate from the Resuscitation Council UK or equivalent
