Job summary
Are you a new graduate or an experienced Band 5 Physiotherapist looking for a new challenge whilst continuing to develop your clinical experience and specialism?

We are looking for an enthusiastic, self-motivated, innovative Physiotherapist who is interested in expanding their knowledge and skills across a plethora of clinical areas. You will need good clinical skills, a flexible approach; including excellent team working, organisational and time management skills.

You will joining our dynamic team of Therapists who strive towards holistic recovery and regaining independence whilst working closely with other members of the multi-professional team.PLEASE NOTE, WE MAY CLOSE THIS VACANCY EARLY IF WE RECEIVE HIGH NUMBERS OF APPLICATIONS.

Main duties of the job
The successful candidate will be required to assess and treat patients for Therapy Services throughout the clinical areas of Walsall Healthcare NHS Trust. The post holder will be required to join the rotational scheme, which entails working in a variety of areas to develop a broad knowledge base with in-depth experience in: MSK Outpatients, Respiratory/ICU, Elderly Care, Trauma & Orthopaedics, Specialist Surgery, Intermediate Care Rehabilitation, Community Rehabilitation, Admission Avoidance, Paeds and Stroke Services.

The post holder will able to engage in our preceptorship programme, in-service training schedule for each rotational area and will be supported to complete all appropriate competencies. This will also include being able to join the respiratory on-call service after a period of supportive development.

Due to the nature of the work throughout the whole of the health economy, successful candidates will need to be in possession of a driving licence to legally drive within the UK and to have means of accessing a vehicle for the purposes of work.

We are keen to grow our own workforce and have a commitment to the retention of our junior staff, we are keen to work with our band 5 Physiotherapists to plan their career trajectories and expose them to the necessary clinical areas to achieve their aims. In some instances developmental posts into band 6 positions can be accommodated in order to enable individuals to specialise in areas they are passionate about.

About us
Walsall Healthcare NHS Trust is an integrated Trust and the only provider of NHS acute care in Walsall, serving a population of 284,300. It provides inpatient and outpatient services at the Manor Hospital as well as a wide range of services in the community. Walsall Manor houses the full range of district general hospital services under one roof. The £170 million development was completed in 2010, and ongoing upgrades ensure the Trust now has state-of-the-art facilities, including a Critical Care Unit, Neonatal Unit, Obstetric Theatre, and Integrated Assessment Unit. A new Urgent and Emergency Care Centre, opened in March 2023, has significantly improved emergency care facilities and capacity, providing almost 5,000 square metres of additional clinical space.

Job responsibilities
  • To be professionally and legally accountable for all aspects of own work.
  • To undertake assessment of patients, using clinical reasoning skills and including manual assessment techniques.
  • To formulate and deliver an individual physiotherapy treatment programme based on sound knowledge of evidence based practice and treatment options, using clinical assessment, reasoning skills and knowledge of treatment techniques and skills, e.g. manual therapy techniques, patient education, exercise classes, electrotherapy techniques and other alternative options.
  • To undertake a defined clinical area of responsibility. To be responsible for providing physiotherapy assessment and treatment plans for patients within this remit.
  • To be responsible for organising and planning your own caseload to meet service and patient priorities, readjusting plans as situations change/arise.
  • To formulate realistic goals and participate in discharge planning as appropriate within the multi-disciplinary team.
  • To obtain consent as outlined in Chartered Society of Physiotherapy (CSP), Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC) and Trust policies.
  • To effectively communicate with patients who may have barriers to understanding or communicating, e.g. blind, deaf, dysphasic, or who do not have English as a first language.
  • To evaluate patient progress, reassess and alter treatment programmes if required.
  • To be responsible for maintaining accurate, confidential and comprehensive patient treatment records in line with the CSP, HCPC and to follow Trust documentation policies.
  • To actively participate in multi-disciplinary team meetings and integrate physiotherapy treatment into the overall treatment programme. This may include discussion of patient care, patient progress and involvement in discharge planning from an acute setting.
  • To be an active member of the respiratory on-call evening and weekend service on completion of the necessary training and that the competency levels have been undertaken and achieved.
  • When working on the On-Call duty rota, undertake the assessment and treatment of acutely ill patients with respiratory problems and maintain associated records as an autonomous practitioner with support always being available.
  • When working on the On-Call service, provide feedback to medical, nursing and other members of the multi-disciplinary team regarding patients respiratory and chest functions/conditions.
  • To ensure that your own practice meets the level of competency required by professional standards of physiotherapy practice.
  • To discuss with mentor / supervisor the organising and planning of own caseload to meet service and patient priorities, readjusting plans as situations change/arise and where appropriate delegate tasks to Clinical Support Workers and technical instructors.

Qualifications
Essential
  • Degree or equivalent demonstrable experience
  • Registered with Health and Care Professions Council

Experience
Essential
  • A broad range of undergraduate placements, being able to demonstrate experience in musculo-skeletal, respiratory and neurology
  • Be able to demonstrates knowledge or experience in musculoskeletal, respiratory and neurology
  • Experience of discharge planning in the NHS
  • Aware of the impact of the HCPC (and CSP where appropriate) professional code of conduct

Desirable
  • Post graduate experience in NHS

  • Computer literate
