Job summary
The Endoscopy Nurse Manager / Clinical Practice Educator is responsible for providing professional, clinical, and operational leadership within the Endoscopy Unit. The post holder will ensure the delivery of safe, effective, high-quality, patient-centred care while promoting excellence in clinical practice, education, and service improvement.

The role combines leadership, management, and education by supporting the development of the endoscopy nursing workforce through teaching, supervision, competency assessment, and continuing professional development. The post holder will work collaboratively with multidisciplinary teams to ensure compliance with NHS standards, professional guidelines, infection prevention and control policies, and accreditation requirements.

The Endoscopy Nurse Manager / Clinical Practice Educator will oversee the day-to-day management of the endoscopy service, including workforce planning, resource management, quality assurance, and clinical governance. They will lead on implementing evidence-based practice, supporting service development, and fostering a culture of continuous learning, innovation, and patient safety.

The post holder will act as a clinical expert and role model, providing leadership and mentorship to nursing and support staff, facilitating induction programmes, delivering mandatory and specialist training, and ensuring staff maintain the knowledge and skills required to deliver high-quality endoscopy care.

Main duties of the job
Provide visible clinical and operational leadership within the Endoscopy Unit, ensuring the delivery of safe, effective, high-quality, patient-centred care.

Manage the day-to-day running of the endoscopy service, ensuring appropriate staffing levels, skill mix, and effective deployment of resources.

Lead, motivate, and support the nursing and support workforce, promoting a positive working environment that reflects NHS values.

Act as a clinical expert and professional role model, demonstrating evidence-based practice and high standards of patient care.

Develop, coordinate, and deliver education and training programmes for registered nurses, healthcare support workers, students, apprentices, and new members of staff.

Lead the induction, orientation, competency assessment, and preceptorship of staff working within the Endoscopy Unit.

Maintain competency frameworks and ensure staff achieve and maintain the knowledge and practical skills required for endoscopy practice.

Identify learning and development needs through appraisal, clinical supervision, and workforce planning, supporting continuing professional development.

Promote a culture of lifelong learning, reflective practice, and continuous quality improvement.

Ensure compliance with national guidance, professional standards, NHS policies, Joint Advisory Group (JAG) standards, infection prevention and control requirements, and local governance arrangements.

Job responsibilities
Main Responsibilities
1. Operational & Administrative Leadership

• Resource & Staff Management: Manage daily unit operations, workflow, patient scheduling, and procedure room efficiency (pre-assessment, procedure, and recovery/PACU).
• Budget & Procurement: Oversee department budgets, inventory, and procurement of specialized endoscopy consumables and capital equipment.
• Staffing & Scheduling: Plan rosters, manage skill-mix ratios, handle leave requests, and address staffing shortages to maintain safe operational capacity.
• HR Functions: Lead recruitment, onboarding, annual performance appraisals, and manage employee relations within the department.

2. Clinical Practice Education & Competency Framework

• Education & Curriculum Design: Develop, implement, and update comprehensive training programs for new hires, student nurses, registered nurses, and healthcare assistants.
• Competency Assessment: Conduct hands-on skills assessments and maintain competency frameworks (e.g., JETS Workforce, DOPS/Direct Observation of Procedural Skills) across all core endoscopy domains:

• Diagnostic and therapeutic upper and lower GI endoscopies (EGD, Colonoscopy).
• Advanced therapeutic procedures (e.g., ERCP, EUS, EMR, ESD).
• Conscious sedation monitoring, airway management, and recovery.

• On-the-Floor Mentorship: Provide direct bedside coaching, working alongside staff in procedure rooms to refine technical skills and complex case handling.
• Orientation & Preceptorship: Lead the orientation and preceptorship pathways for newly registered nurses and overseas-educated staff.

3. Infection Control & Technical Standards

• Decontamination & Traceability: Oversee and teach compliance with scope reprocessing, high-level disinfection (HLD), and automated endoscope reprocessor (AER) protocols, ensuring strict tracking and audit readiness.
• Equipment Maintenance: Ensure regular calibration, maintenance, and safety inspections of all scopes, light sources, and electrocautery units.

4. Governance, Quality Assurance & Safety

• Accreditation Compliance: Maintain departmental compliance with national and regional standards (e.g., JAG accreditation, Joint Commission).
• Quality Improvement (QI): Lead audit cycles, track clinical quality metrics (e.g., cecal intubation rates, perforation rates, sedation safety), and lead performance improvement initiatives.
• Incident Management: Investigate clinical incidents, conduct root-cause analyses, and translate lessons learned into educational action plans.
