Job summaryThe
IBD Clinical Nurse Consultant will provide an autonomous, expert, nurse-led service for which they are accountable. This role complements the Consultant Gastroenterologist by sharing the IBD patient workload.
The post holder will:
- Accept referrals for new and complex patients to the service, as well as those with established IBD
- Make best use of advanced clinical skills across sites (APH and CGH)
The IBD Clinical Nurse Consultant will make autonomous decisions regarding treatment pathways, informed by evidence-based practice and specialist clinical knowledge. This includes:
- Performing detailed clinical history taking, examination, and diagnostic assessment
- Formulating and implementing treatment plans, including prescribing medicines in IBD care
With a supportive and structured job plan, the post holder will also play a significant role in developing and influencing strategies and policies to ensure excellence in clinical care for IBD patients. This will include:
- Leading and facilitating the implementation and development of local and national policies
- Contributing to the planning of the strategic direction of acute care for IBD patients within the organisation
Main duties of the jobThe
IBD Clinical Nurse Consultant will provide expert nursing advice to ensure patient needs are met by leading, challenging, and improving practice within gastroenterology and IBD settings. This includes supportive care and conservative management approaches.
The post holder will function both independently and as part of a multidisciplinary clinical team, demonstrating a high level of competence across a wide range of advanced clinical skills that complement the medical role in the delivery of healthcare.
In addition, the role includes:
- Providing managerial and professional leadership to the team of IBD nurses within the department
- Supporting trainee Advanced Practitioners rotating through the department as part of their educational programme
- Delivering an in-reach, nurse-led IBD service into acute areas and non-gastroenterology wards, offering urgent specialist opinion
- Managing and mentoring junior IBD nurses
The IBD Clinical Nurse Consultant will also:
- Deliver 2-3 nurse-led clinics per week for newly referred patients and follow-up of patients with complex IBD needs, with the aim of reducing hospital appointments and waiting times
- Provide an urgent ambulatory drop-in clinic for patients with complex IBD, enabling intensive follow-up and helping to prevent hospital readmission following acute disease episodes
