Job summary
We are seeking an experienced and motivated Ward Nurse (SDL) to join our weekend service at James Paget NHS Trust. This role offers the opportunity to take on a leadership position within a busy ward environment, supporting patient care across specialties including general surgery, ENT, and gynaecology.

As a Ward Nurse SDL, you will be responsible for overseeing the delivery of safe, effective, and patient-centred care, while coordinating ward activity and supporting junior staff during your shift. You will play a key role in ensuring patients receive high-quality pre- and post-operative care, maintaining clinical standards, and promoting patient safety at all times.

Working within a structured shift pattern, including early, mid, and late shifts across weekends, you will collaborate closely with multidisciplinary teams to ensure smooth patient flow and efficient service delivery. You will also act as a point of escalation, helping to resolve issues and ensure the ward operates effectively within a supportive and well-established clinical environment.

Main duties of the job
  • Coordinate day-to-day service delivery across the ward for gynaecology, ENT, and general surgery patients
  • Act as shift lead, overseeing staff allocation, workload management, and patient flow
  • Ensure safe staffing levels and escalate concerns in line with hospital policies
  • Support clinical decision-making and provide senior nursing guidance to junior staff
  • Monitor patient acuity, prioritising care and admissions/discharges effectively
  • Liaise with theatre, recovery, emergency department, and other wards to maintain patient flow
  • Ensure high standards of patient care, safety, and experience across all specialties
  • Oversee complex post-operative care, including managing complications or deterioration
  • Lead ward rounds coordination and ensure actions are completed promptly
  • Promote adherence to infection control, clinical governance, and NHS policies
  • Support discharge planning and work closely with multidisciplinary teams
  • Handle escalation of incidents, complaints, and operational pressures in a timely manner
  • Maintain accurate documentation and contribute to audits and service improvement initiatives
