Job summaryNewham Hospital Department of Anaesthetics has undergone significant expansion, driven by the implementation of the Barts Health Surgical Strategy. Within this trust wide strategy Newham has established itself as a high-volume low acuity surgical hub catering for a range of specialties including elective orthopaedics in the Gateway Surgical Centre.
We are seeking a Locum Anaesthetist with a specialist interest in Pain medicine. This individual would need to share our values and vision to join our team of consultants to enable this to happen. You will need to be committed and keen, able to work collaboratively with diverse groups, and be able to show leadership and integrity. As one of our Locum Anaesthetists, you will be expected to take a role within the managerial structure of the department, and you will demonstrate a commitment to education, supporting the junior staff in their professional development. Above all else you will be an excellent clinician who delivers great care to your patients.
We are particularly looking for anaesthetists with a specialist interest in regional anaesthesia orthopaedic and regional anaesthesia.
Main duties of the jobProvide safe, effective, responsive, and caring anaesthetic services, with a specific focus on advancing the department's acute and chronic Pain Medicine pathways.
Participate in the consultant anaesthetic on-call rota at Newham Hospital, which includes managing paediatric and obstetric emergencies.
Ensure that clinical standards are maintained and continuously developed through clinical audit, quality improvement (QI) projects, and evidence-based research, particularly within pain management services.
Participate actively in clinical governance frameworks. This includes the timely reporting of incidents, undertaking learning responses, compassionate patient engagement, fulfilling the Duty of Candour, and proactively responding to complaints.
Maintain a thorough familiarity with the Royal College of Anaesthetists' curriculum for postgraduate medical education. Contribute actively to the training requirements of junior doctors, including delivering tutorials and providing educational supervision.
Agree to a formal job plan with the Clinical Lead for Anaesthetics and participate in the rota to deliver a robust, consultant-led service

QualificationsEssential- Full GMC registration and a licence to practice
Desirable- Higher degree such as MSc or PhD
ExperienceEssential- Demonstratable interest in pain medicine
- Wide experience in all areas of anaesthesia, including obstetrics and paediatrics
Desirable- Experience in managing paediatric airway.
- Quality improvement projects and/or research related to pain medicine
- Member of the British Pain Society or equivalent
- Experience of the UK healthcare system
