Job summary
We are seeking to appoint an experienced and motivated Practice Development Nurse to join the Rainbow Paediatric Unit at Newham University Hospital, part of Barts Health NHS Trust. This senior role is central to supporting the development of a skilled, confident and compassionate paediatric nursing workforce. We are looking for a highly committed Registered Children's Nurse who can provide strong professional leadership and drive excellence in clinical education.

The post holder will take responsibility for the education and development of pre- and post-registration learners, newly qualified nurses and existing staff within the ward. This includes coordinating and delivering structured teaching, supporting learning in practice, and ensuring that all staff have access to high-quality training that reflects current evidence-based standards. You will lead on paediatric resuscitation training/SIMS, oversee the safe introduction and implementation of new medical equipment, and provide ongoing professional development opportunities such as reflective practice, clinical skills updates and competency assessment.

The role also involves contributing to the recruitment and retention of nursing staff, participating in interviews and supporting the induction and transition of new colleagues.

Main duties of the job
  • To co-ordinate the Preceptorship Programme for newly qualified nurses and for those that are new to Paediatric nursing.
  • To work clinically alongside newly qualified nurses and those that are new to Paediatric nursing to ensure that they are provided with support in the clinical environment.
  • To demonstrate exceptional clinical skills in all areas of Paediatric Nursing and possess the ability to develop and teach others.
  • To work in partnership with the senior management team to develop a working environment that supports learning and promotes excellent standards of care of all staff.
  • To initiate, facilitate and support innovative change within Paediatrics in line with current clinical and academic evidence, national standards and relevant reports.
  • To evaluate programmes of training and education in collaboration with NNU staff.

Education and Qualifications
Essential
  • Current registration with the NMC Paediatric RN
  • Post registration qualifications
  • Teaching and assessing qualification and /or Mentorship Module
  • EPALS training compliance
Desirable
  • Evidence of degree level study
  • EPALS instructor status
  • Post graduate teaching qualification
  • Evidence of leadership course attendance

Experience
Essential
  • Experience at Band 6 and above
  • Experience in Emegrency department and/or Paediatric intensive care or equivalent
  • A team player able to work well with others and demonstrate commitment to team objectives
  • Experience in teaching and compiling teaching plans
  • Ability to work effectively in a busy and acute environment
  • Ability to remain calm and work effectively in pressure situations
  • Experience of mentoring students and junior members of staff
