Job Summary
Betsi Cadwaladr University Health Board (BCUHB) is looking for a full-time Locum Consultant in Trauma and Orthopaedics (T&O) who will be predominantly based at Ysbyty Glan Clwyd and Abergele Hospital (and the North Wales Elective Hub at Llandudno once open) for period of six months.

Main Duties of the Job
The duties of the post are to support the Trauma and Orthopaedic (T&O) team in the provision of elective and emergency orthopaedic surgery with an emphasis on lower limb arthroplasty surgery for hips and knees. The appointee will join a team that comprises of seven arthroplasty surgeons who deliver a busy service for both trauma and elective hip and knee arthroplasties.

The appointee will work within the T&O team at large which includes thirteen Consultants offering a range of sub-specialty services including foot and ankle surgery, lower limb arthroplasty, soft tissue, shoulder, elbow, hand and wrist surgery.

There is a Trauma on call commitment associated with the post with a frequency of 1:11 weekdays, Monday to Thursday and 1:11 weekends Friday to Sunday.

The appointee will be expected to contribute to the departmental programmes for education and training as well as the clinical governance process within the Department and the Health Board.

Person Specification
Qualifications
Essential
  • Full GMC Registration with licence to practice
  • FRCS/MRCS and FRCS (Trauma and Orthopaedic) or equivalent

Desirable
  • MD or other higher degree
  • On the GMC Specialist Register in Trauma and Orthopaedic Surgery

Experience
Essential
  • Broad training in Trauma and Orthopaedic Surgery
  • Broad Hip and Knee arthroscopic and open surgery experience
  • Experience in management of trauma
  • Evidence of working effectively as a part of a multidisciplinary team
  • Teaching and training of post/undergraduate medical staff
  • Evidence of initiating, progressing and completing audit

Desirable
  • Fellowship in Lower Limb Surgery including Trauma
  • Experience in Revision Surgery

Skills and Attributes
Essential
  • Ability to deal with General Trauma and General Paediatric trauma
  • Leadership Skills
  • Ability to work as part of a team
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Excellent interpersonal skills - ability to communicate sensitively with patients, relatives and staff
  • Teaching Skills
  • Understanding of information systems and technology
  • Clinical skills appropriate to the post

  • Welsh speaker or willingness to learn the Welsh Language
