Job summary
Locum Consultant - Plastic Surgery & Burns | St Andrew's Centre, Broomfield Hospital

We are seeking a Locum Consultant to deliver a specialist clinical service in General Plastic Surgery and Burns at the renowned St Andrew's Centre, Broomfield Hospital, with responsibilities across associated satellite sites.

This role offers the opportunity to contribute to a high-quality, patient-centred service within a leading specialist centre. You will play an active role in advancing clinical care through research, leading and participating in projects that aim to improve patient outcomes. Collaboration with local and national university partners, alongside colleagues within the St Andrew's clinical community, will be central to this work.

All Consultants are supported and encouraged to undertake study leave to maintain and enhance their clinical expertise, ensuring ongoing compliance with Continuing Medical Education (CME) requirements. Main duties of the job
  • Take overall responsibility for the clinical care of patients within the Plastic Surgery Service, including associated administrative duties, accurate record keeping and effective communication with patients and General Practitioners.
  • Provide clinical leadership within the service, working collaboratively with colleagues to ensure the delivery of high-quality patient care.
  • Work as part of a multidisciplinary team to support integrated and effective patient management.
  • Participate in on-call and out-of-hours consultant cover, including cross-cover during colleagues' annual and study leave.
  • Undertake regular ward rounds to review patient progress and ensure safe, effective and timely care.
  • Contribute to clinical audit, quality improvement initiatives and ongoing continuing professional development activities.
  • Supervise, teach and support the training and professional development of junior medical staff, nurses and medical students.
  • Maintain high standards of care and professional practice, ensuring accountability to the Medical Director, Chief Executive and Trust Board.

Person Specification
Qualifications
  • Essential: MBBS or Equivalent
  • Desirable: Evidence of completion of specialist training or equivalent

Experience & Knowledge
  • Essential: Evidence of thorough and broad training and experience in the specialty
  • Essential: Comprehensive knowledge in the specialty and ability to offer expert clinical opinion on range of problems
  • Essential: Demonstrates good knowledge of the structures and culture of the NHS, roles, responsibilities and relationships across the MDT and the multi-professional team.
  • Essential: Able to take full and independent responsibility for delivering service without direct supervision.

Communication Skills
  • Essential: Excellent written skills
  • Essential: Evidence of management experience or training.
  • Essential: Ability to advise on efficient and smooth running of specialist training.
  • Essential: Ability to manage and lead department.

Research / Audit Experience
  • Essential: Knowledge of the principles of research/audit and ability to interpret and apply clinical research.
  • Desirable: Recent published clinical research in peer reviewed journal.
  • Desirable: Ability to supervise postgraduate research.

Teaching Experience
  • Essential: Knowledge and experience of supervising undergraduates, junior doctors and other staff.
  • Desirable: Evidence of teaching activities undertaken as one to one, small group, anatomical and cadaveric dissections, and lectures to larger groups at regional or national level
