An exciting opportunity has arisen for an enthusiastic, motivated and dynamic nurse to join our Rheumatology Clinical Nurse Specialist team, working in the Rheumatology Department which is based at St Luke's Hospital in Bradford.

This post will offer a strong grounding in all areas of Rheumatology and is a unique opportunity for a skilled nurse looking to develop a career in Rheumatology. They will be supported by an experienced team of senior Rheumatology Nurse Specialists.

Applicants would ideally have experience in the care of patients with rheumatological conditions, but this is not essential. To be self-motivated and be able to demonstrate the ability to work independently. Be willing to gain knowledge and skills with educating, monitoring and prescribing for patients whilst on immunosuppressive medications. Candidates should be committed to the provision of high-quality patient care and demonstrate excellent communication skills.

Main duties of the job
This senior clinical role is focused on managing a caseload of patients with chronic autoimmune and inflammatory conditions. Which includes the assessment, monitoring and prescribing of immunosuppressant drug treatments.

Job responsibilities
Key Clinical Responsibilities
  • Nurse-Led Clinics: Autonomously run clinics to assess disease activity and monitor the efficacy of treatments such as DMARDs, biologics, and JAK inhibitors.
  • Treatment Monitoring: Request and interpret blood investigations to ensure patient safety while on immunosuppressive medications.
  • Telephone Advice Lines: Manage daily helplines to provide urgent advice on flare management, medication side effects, and blood results.
  • Patient Education: Counsel patients on new diagnoses, medications, and self-management strategies for long-term conditions.
  • Safe prescribing.

Leadership and Managerial Duties
  • Supervision: Act as a role model and mentor for Band 5 nurses, healthcare assistants, and student nurses and medical students.
  • Service Development: Contribute to clinical audits and help develop departmental policies or innovative patient care pathways.
  • MDT Collaboration: Work closely with consultants, physiotherapists, and occupational therapists to ensure a streamlined patient journey.
  • Clinical Governance: Participate in research studies and implement evidence-based practice to maintain high care standards.

Essential Requirements
  • NMC Registration: Valid registration as a Registered Nurse is mandatory.
  • Experience: Usually requires 25 years of post-registration experience, preferably in an acute medical or rheumatology setting.
  • Advanced Skills: Non-Medical Prescribing (NMP) or a willingness to work towards it is essential.
  • Specialist Knowledge: Familiarity with theRCN Rheumatology Nurse Frameworkand NICE guidelines for inflammatory conditions.

  • Minimum 3 years post-registration
  • At least 18 months at band 5 or above in a rheumatology environment.
  • Experience of caring for patients with rheumatology conditions or research

  • All applicants to have demonstrable skills in written and spoken English adequate to enable effective communication about medical topics with patients and colleagues demonstrated by one of the following: -that applicants have undertaken undergraduate medical training in English; or -have achieved the following scores in the academic International English Language Testing System (IELTS) in a single sitting within 24 months at time of application - Overall 7, Speaking 7, Listening 7, Reading 7, Writing 7. IELTS certificate to be presented at interview. If applicants believe they have adequate communication skills but do not fit into one of these examples they must provide supporting evidence
