Principal Clinical Neuro Psychologist

We have an exciting opportunity for a motivated, enthusiastic and skilled Clinical Psychologist who is passionate about working in neuropsychology and neurorehabilitation at our specialist neurorehabilitation centre at Ty Aberdafen, Lanelli.

You will join a strong and well-established interdisciplinary/multidisciplinary team comprising psychology, physiotherapy, occupational therapy, speech and language therapy, assistant psychologists and other therapy assistants and rehabilitation support staff. Together, we work collaboratively within a neurobehavioural model to help people rebuild their lives following acquired brain injury.

This is an ideal opportunity for a newly qualified psychologist looking to develop through a preceptorship programme or for an experienced Band 7 ready to progress into an 8A role. You will gain exposure to a varied and stimulating caseload, from complex neurobehavioural presentations to cognitive rehabilitation and emotional adjustment work, supported by consultant neuropsychologists and senior colleagues.

Ty Aberdafen is located in the Avenue area of Llanelli. Llanelli is where east Wales meets west Wales. It is located on the Loughor Estuary, some 12 miles south-east of Carmarthen town. We are within close distance to number of attractions. Millennium Coastal Path, which runs from Llanelli through Sandy Water Park, Burry Port to Pembrey Forest.

Main duties of the job
The Role:
Ty Aberdafen works with people who have to cope with a range of cognitive, physical and / or emotional symptoms following a severe brain injury. Rehabilitation is based on a neurobehavioral approach and focuses on enabling service users to function more independently and to participate in as many of their previous roles and activities as possible, while developing their lives with privacy, dignity and respect.

You will provide strategic, professional leadership to the multi-disciplinary rehabilitation team, which includes Assistant Psychologists, Rehabilitation Support Workers, Occupational Therapists, Physiotherapists and Speech and Language Therapists.

Your responsibilities will include:
  • ensuring the provision and development of high quality, innovative, and evidence based neuropsychological rehabilitation practice.
  • providing specialist psychological assessment of our service users, using psychological and neuropsychological tests, self-report scales, structured observations and interviews;
  • formulating and implementing specialist psychological treatment plans for mental health and adjustment difficulties based on a multi-factorial psychological understanding and current evidence-based best practice;
  • contributing highly specialist psychological advice to the multi-disciplinary formulation of appropriate therapeutic approaches or intervention plans, and supervising their implementation;

Job responsibilities
MAIN PURPOSE
To work as part of a clinical team, providing clinical psychology and neuropsychology input within the Brainkind neurobehavioral model to people with acquired brain injury. You will consult with internal and external professionals, family members and service users. You will engage in relevant service development, training, supervision, audit, and research and advise other professionals as appropriate.

MAIN TASKS AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Clinical / Professional Practice
The postholder is required to:
  • Provide specialist psychological and neuropsychological assessment of adults with acquired brain injury referred to Brainkind and related services, using and interpreting information from a variety of sources including tests, self-report scales, structured observations, and interviews with service users, family members, and others involved in care.
  • Coordinate service users care as appropriate and agreed with your supervisor.
  • Formulate and implement plans of specialist psychological and/or neuropsychological intervention to support neurorehabilitation as part of the multidisciplinary team, based on current evidence-based best practice.
  • Develop personal goals with service users and translate these into specific, measurable, achievable, relevant, and time-bound goals with the team.
  • Undertake a range of psychological therapeutic and rehabilitation interventions, drawing on various psychological models and modalities (individual, family, and group), tailored to individual needs and context, and evaluate outcomes.
  • Contribute specialist psychological advice to clinical and neuropsychological formulations, therapeutic approaches, and intervention plans, and oversee psychological aspects of implementation in collaboration with other staff.
  • Undertake psychologically based risk assessment and management for relevant service users and provide advice on psychological aspects of risk to the team.
  • Maintain high standards of clinical record keeping in accordance with Brainkind, professional, and national standards for healthcare records.
  • Collect relevant data on work activities as required.
  • Communicate effectively through written, virtual, and verbal methods, in line with confidentiality policies, to ensure delivery of a high-quality service.
  • Provide specialist psychological guidance to carers and families of service users.
  • Provide supervision, consultation and training to assistant psychologists, staff and trainee clinical psychologists where relevant.
  • Exercise autonomous professional judgment and responsibility for the psychological management of service users on your caseload, seeking supervision as required.
  • Demonstrate a duty of care for equipment and resources supplied by Brainkind.
  • Remain informed of current research and evaluations to support evidence-based practice and contribute this perspective within the multidisciplinary team.
  • Contribute to project management and complex audits, assisting colleagues in developing service provision.
  • Coordinate administration of agreed outcome measures.
  • With approval, initiate and conduct psychologically based research relevant to the care of adults with acquired brain injury, as agreed with your supervisor.
  • Keep up to date with developments in Clinical Psychology and Neuropsychology, particularly in neurorehabilitation.

ABOUT YOU:
  • Degree in Psychology, accepted by BPS for Graduate Basis Registration (GBR) or equivalent.
  • Doctorate in Clinical Psychology (BPS accredited) or its equivalent to meet requirements to register as a practitioner psychologist with the HCPC.
  • Registered with the HCPC
  • Knowledge of relevant legislation in relation to the service user group.
  • Relevant experience in producing clinical reports.

  • Ability to communicate at all levels, both oral and written to a range of audiences.
  • Ability to research, analyse and manage complex multi-factorial clinical information from a range of sources.
  • Resilient with the ability to work with unpredictable service users i.e. demanding, verbally and physically aggressive.
  • Ability to effectively work as part of an interdisciplinary/multidisciplinary team.
  • Interest in neuropsychology and/or previous experience working in a neuropsychology setting or conducting research in the field.

Person Specification
Qualifications
Essential
  • Good honours degree in Psychology i.e. 2 ii or above.
  • Doctorate in Clinical Psychology (BPS accredited) or its equivalent to meet requirements to register as a practitioner psychologist with the HCPC.
  • Registered Practitioner Psychologist with HCPC.
  • Post Graduate training in Neuropsychology through an accredited route for the QiCN (e.g. PG Dip).
  • Ability to comprehend and communicate verbally and in writing highly complex and sensitive information in a manner appropriate to a range of settings and audiences, including complex highly emotive situations and those with significantly impaired communication capacities.

Desirable
  • Qualification in Clinical Neuropsychology. Member of the Register of Clinical Neuropsychologists.
  • Clinical supervision training for Doctoral trainees.
  • Post graduate training in psychological therapy models.
  • Ability to plan and organise over the long term, the delivery of a large specialist service in the light of a thorough understanding of national policy and an expert interpretation of current professional best practice.
