Job summaryWe welcome applications from enthusiastic individuals with a keen interest in working with people experiencing a first episode psychosis. We are recruiting a 1.0 WTE Band 7 Psychologist to work into the Northumberland Early Intervention in Psychosis (EIP) team. You will be joining a passionate, supportive and skilled network of psychosis therapists across the Trust.
You will work closely within a well established multidisciplinary team across a range of tasks, such as providing specialist assessments and psychological therapy to people presenting with first episode psychosis. There are opportunities to contribute to team formulation, care planning, training and supervision as required. There are strong links with national research programmes and opportunities to contribute to audit and research.
The successful candidate will be supported to make use of opportunities to access additional training such as in Family Interventions, Post Graduate Certificate for CBT in Psychosis and Bipolar, or to work towards British Association for Behavioural and Cognitive Psychotherapies (BABCP) accreditation.
The post holder will be clinically supervised by a senior psychologist / psychological therapist and professionally supervised by the consultant clinical psychologist. You will join a wider supportive and skilled network of psychological professionals across the psychosis pathway in the North Community CBU.
Main duties of the jobThe main duties of the role involve providing one to one assessments, individual and family therapy, and group interventions. Psychology is an integral part of the EIP team; facilitating formulation; contributing to assessment; providing support to Community Practitioners as needed; and contributing to regular training and development events. You will receive regular supervision and will be supported to maintain ongoing continuing professional development.
Therapy is based around highly individualised formulation. We work collaboratively with individuals and families/systems around them in a trauma-informed and neuro-affirming way. Typical therapy work includes helping people make sense of their psychosis and working with paranoia, voice-hearing, traumatic events, childhood adversity, anxiety and bereavement.
The team contribute to delivering Northumberland Mood on Track (an online CBT group for those with a diagnosis of bi-polar disorder) in partnership with psychology staff from the Northumberland Community Treatment Teams. There is the opportunity for the post holder to contribute to this provision, and the wider development of our group work offer.

Person SpecificationEducation and QualificationEssential- Doctoral level training in clinical psychology, including specifically models of psychopathology, clinical psychometrics and Neuropsychology, two or more distinct psychological therapies and lifespan developmental psychology as accredited by the British Psychological Society and the HCPC.
- HCPC registered practitioner psychologist
Desirable- Pre-qualification training and qualifications in research methodology, staff training and/or other fields of applied psychology.
Knowledge and ExperienceEssential- Experience of specialist psychological assessment and treatment of clients across the full range of care settings including outpatient, community, primary care, and inpatient settings
- Experience of working with a wide variety of client groups, across the whole life course with presenting problems that reflect the full range of clinical severity, including severe and enduring mental health problems, psychosis and personality disorder.
- Doctoral level knowledge of research methodology, research design and complex multivariable data analysis as practiced within the clinical fields of psychology.
Desirable- Experience of teaching, training and/or supervision.
- Knowledge of legislation in relation to the client group and mental health.
- Experience of the application of clinical psychology in different cultural contexts.
Skills and CompetenciesEssential- Skills in the use of complex methods of psychological assessment, intervention and management. Skills in evidence based psychological interventions.
- Well-developed skills in the ability to communicate effectively, orally and in writing, complex, highly technical and/or clinical sensitive information to clients, their family, carers and other professional colleagues both within and outside the NHS.
- Skills in providing consultation to other professional and non-professional groups.
