Job summary
We are seeking a Band 7 Clinical Psychologist to join our Psychology Team within the Community Mental Health Service (CMHS) and Eating Disorder Team on the Isle of Wight. This is an exciting 23-month fixed-term contract/secondment opportunity where you will work with individuals with complex mental health needs as part of a supportive and experienced multidisciplinary team.

This role offers the opportunity to develop your clinical skills across a range of presentations, providing psychological assessment, formulation and intervention while contributing to a psychologically informed service.

Main duties of the job
To provide high quality specialist assessment, formulation, individual and group psychological therapy to patients of the Isle of Wight Community Mental Health Teams and Eating Disorder Team working within professional guidelines and the organisational structure of the Service's policies and procedures.

The characteristics of the core population include people with enduring mental health needs and complex emotional needs who may find it difficult to:

• Make or maintain relationships, connect with other people, including friends, family or work colleagues
• Manage and control their emotions
• Cope with life and difficult feelings
• Control their behaviours and impulses

Duties will also include working with other people involved in individuals' care (eg family or named carers). A recovery-focused approach is essential.

The postholder will place an emphasis on co-production and demonstrate an attitude which respects and values individuals and their carers and the core values of the Trust: Compassion, Accountability, Respect and Excellence.

Qualifications
Essential

• A doctoral level qualification in clinical or counselling psychology or equivalent, and registration with the HCPC as a practitioner psychologist.
• Or
• Qualification as an RMN, social worker or occupational therapist with post-qualification training in psychological therapy equivalent to a diploma or above. Applications from qualified psychological therapists without a core professional training will also be considered if they meet the other criteria.
• AND
• Accredited registration with a relevant psychological professional body (e.g. HCPC, BABCP, ACAT, EMDR Association).

Desirable

• Training and qualifications in staff training, other psychological therapies, or other fields of applied psychology.

Experience
Essential

• Experience of specialist psychological assessment and treatment of individuals and their families across a range of care settings (e.g. inpatient, community and primary care settings).
• Experience of working with a wide variety of client groups, across the whole life course presenting problems that reflect the full range of clinical severity.
• Experience of maintaining a high degree of professionalism in the face of highly emotive and distressing problems, verbal abuse, and the threat of physical abuse.
• Experience of teaching, training and/or supervision.
• Skills in the use of complex methods of psychological assessment, intervention and management frequently requiring sustained and intense concentration.
• Well-developed skills in the ability to communicate effectively (orally and in writing) complex, highly technical and/or clinically sensitive information to clients, their families, carers and other professional colleagues both within and outside the NHS.
• Skills in providing consultation to other professional and non-professional groups.
• Ability to teach and train others.
• Ability to identify and employ mechanisms of clinical governance as appropriate, to support and maintain clinical practice in the face of regular exposure to highly emotive material and challenging behaviour.
• Ability to contain and work with high levels of emotional distress and to 'hold' others' stress.
• Ability to prioritise work, focus and manage time effectively, including caseload management and organisation.
• A commitment to the needs of individuals and carers of the Trust within a recovery ethos
• Computer literacy to be able to use electronic clinical records, email, word processing and spreadsheets.
• Ability to travel between sites if required.

• Experience of the application of psychology in different cultural contexts.
• Knowledge of the theory and practice of psychological therapy in specific groups (e.g. psychosis, personality disorder, dual diagnoses, people with additional disabilities etc).
