Job Summary
Applications are invited for a twelve month Locum General Surgery Consultant with an interest in Colorectal Surgery. The successful candidate will join the enthusiastic team of general surgeons providing acute and elective general surgical services at Harrogate and District Foundation Trust.

The General Surgical department is supported by 1 Associate Specialist, 8 Specialty Doctors, 2 Specialist Registrars along with 8 Doctors in Training (FY1/FY2 and CT combination). There are also 2 GI Nurse specialists, 5 Nurse endoscopists and a team of IBD Nurses supporting the colorectal service.

Main Duties of the Job
The successful candidate would be welcomed into a dynamic multidisciplinary team where we are proud of the service we provide.

The successful candidate would be a core member of the colorectal MDT and be able to perform surgery for colorectal cancer. The Trust is the provider of Bowel Cancer Screening and is a leading organisation for laparoscopic surgery. Furthermore the development of a subspecialist interest in any aspect of lower gastrointestinal surgery would be encouraged. The post will include a 1 in 8 on call rota. The department prides itself on team working and close collaboration with clinical colleagues to provide a high quality general surgical service.

All applicants must possess Specialist Registration with the GMC or within 6 Months of completing a training programme recognised for the award of CCST or equivalent in General Surgery FRCS or equivalent and JAG accreditation for colonoscopy.

Job Responsibilities
  • To provide a comprehensive General surgical service providing optimum care for all patients
  • Maintenance of the highest clinical standards in the management of all presenting patients.
  • To work as part of the General Surgical team offering additional expertise in specialist area of Lower Gastro Intestinal
  • To provide on call service as part of a 1 in 8 rota
  • To share with colleagues responsibility for the day-to-day management of the General Surgery Department.
  • Teaching and training of junior staff and medical students.
  • To actively participate in both departmental and Trust matters concerning Clinical Governance and audit.
  • To have responsibility for ensuring active participation in continuing medical education (CME).

Person Specification
Qualifications
Essential
  • Full GMC registration
  • On the Specialist Register with the GMC or within 6 months of completing a training programme recognised for the award of CCT or equivalent in General Surgery
  • Membership qualification e.g. FRCS or equivalent

Desirable
  • Postgraduate thesis
  • Completed fellowship programme
  • ALS

Clinical Experience
Essential
  • Training and experience in lower gastro- intestinal surgery, including laparoscopic colorectal surgery
  • Training and experience in general surgery including emergency general surgery
  • Training and experience in gastrointestinal endoscopy, including JAG accreditation (or equivalent) in colonoscopy
  • Experience of and commitment to audit
  • Extensive experience in management of surgical conditions.
  • Training and experience in a field to complement the current surgical team

Desirable
  • Five years supervised training in an appropriate STR equivalent training programme
  • Skills and experience to contribute to our acute endoscopy rota for upper GI- bleeding

Research
Essential
  • Ability to convert research evidence into clinical practice

Desirable
  • Publications in peer-reviewed journals
