Job summary
Health and Care Jersey is seeking an experienced and visionary Lead Midwife the Head of Midwifery to provide strategic, professional, and transformational leadership across Jersey Maternity Services. This is a pivotal senior leadership role with responsibility for shaping the future direction of maternity care across inpatient, outpatient, and community settings. Working closely with the Director of Midwifery and Nursing, senior clinical leaders, and multidisciplinary partners, the post holder will lead service transformation, workforce development, quality improvement, and governance to ensure safe, high quality, and person centred care for women, babies, and families. The role is focused on system level leadership, strategy, and assurance, rather than routine day today operational management. The Lead Midwife will lead the evolution of maternity services to meet changing population needs, emerging evidence, and national standards, ensuring services are sustainable, inclusive, and future focused within a unique island healthcare system. Main duties of the job
The Lead Midwife provides senior professional, strategic, and transformational leadership for maternity services across Health & Care Jersey. The role focuses on setting the vision, direction, and professional standards for midwifery practice, ensuring services are safe, person centred, evidence based, and aligned with national standards and Government of Jersey priorities. The post holder acts as the senior professional authority for midwifery and provides assurance to the organisation and Board regarding quality, safety, and outcomes.

Job responsibilities
  • Act as the senior professional lead for midwifery in accordance with Nursing & Midwifery Council standards, Code of Practice, and revalidation requirements.
  • Provide assurance on compliance with statutory requirements relating to patient safety, safeguarding, duty of candour, and clinical governance.
  • Contribute to organisational assurance processes and Board level reporting on maternity quality and safety.
  • Ensure maternity services meet national guidance and recognised best practice e.g. Saving Babies Lives Care Bundle.
  • Lead the strategic development and transformation of maternity services across inpatient, outpatient, and community settings.
  • Provide senior oversight of quality improvement, governance, risk management, audit, learning, and assurance frameworks.
  • Lead the development, implementation, and review of the maternity strategy.
  • Provide professional leadership for the midwifery workforce, including education, development, engagement, and professional standards.
  • Champion person centred, evidence based maternity care that is inclusive and responsive to population needs.
  • Provide strategic oversight of maternity policies, procedures, and care pathways.
  • Lead the use of service user feedback and experience to inform improvement.
  • Work collaboratively with obstetricians, senior nurses, managers, and corporate colleagues.
  • Support workforce planning to maintain safe staffing and service sustainability.
  • Act as a senior professional role model and expert advisor on midwifery matters.
  • Participate in the Midwifery Manager On Call rota, providing senior professional advice out of hours.

Person Specification
Qualifications
  • Current NMC registered with the appropriate specialist qualification for the job
  • Masters degree in Health related subject or equivalent level of experience.
  • Evidence of further relevant professional courses and CPD
  • Mentorship Qualification or equivalent.
  • Management or Leadership award / qualification
