Job summary
We are seeking a motivated and clinically skilled Nursing Associate to join our primary care team. The post holder will provide patient-centred care under the supervision of registered professionals.

Main duties of the job
The post holder will provide patient-centred care under the supervision of registered professionals, with particular responsibility for delivering cervical smear tests (or a willingness to take on further training), administering injections (or a willingness to take on further training), phlebotomy, NHS Health Checks and contributing to the day-to-day delivery of general practice services.

About us
Hedena Health is a GP Surgery based in Headington, Oxford and has approx. 26,000 patients with diverse and interesting populations. We are in an ideal location in Oxford next to the beautiful Bury Knowle Park, with free onsite parking for staff. We have a focus on staff wellbeing through initiatives such as an annual Away Day, staff outings and a Hedena running club. Fresh fruit deliveries and homemade cakes and goodies are a staple in our staff room and morning coffee is in our sunny Quad! As well as being a well-established training practice, we regularly support Student Nurses and Student Paramedics in clinical practice. We work collaboratively with other services in Oxfordshire to develop improved ways of providing excellent care for our patients. We have been successful in managing public health initiatives to improve the lives of the communities we serve and in promoting collaboration with neighboring practices to ensure the best for our patients.

Job responsibilities
  • Undertake cervical smear (cytology) tests in line with national guidelines and protocols.
  • Administer a range of injections, including: Childhood immunisations (as appropriate), Flu and COVID-19 vaccines, Travel vaccinations, Vitamin B12 injections.
  • Perform basic wound care, dressings, and removal of sutures or clips.
  • Record and monitor vital signs, such as blood pressure, pulse, temperature, height, and weight.
  • Perform ECGs, urinalysis, and phlebotomy (if trained).
  • Assist in health promotion, lifestyle advice, and patient education.
  • Maintain accurate and timely clinical documentation using practice systems (EMIS).
  • Follow infection prevention and control protocols and contribute to clinical audits and stock management.

  • An understanding, acceptance and adherence to the need for strict confidentiality.
  • Ability to use own judgement, resourcefulness and common sense.
  • A commitment to maintain a high professional standard of nursing care and keep up to date with all aspects of nursing care relevant to the post.
  • A commitment to ensure all Health and Safety requirements and Infection Control measures are met and to report any problems to the Practice Manager.
  • A commitment to the effective use of practice and NHS resources.
  • An awareness of own limitations and experience.
  • To work only in accordance with the UKCC Code of Conduct and within the Scope of Professional Practice.
  • To have a written professional development plan and to maintain an up to date portfolio which meets the requirements of registration with the UKCC.
  • To cooperate with annual appraisal meetings.

Person Specification
Qualifications
Essential
  • Registered with the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) as a Nursing Associate with no active conditions to practice.
  • Trained in cervical screening (or willingness to undertake training).
  • Trained in Childhood immunisations (or willingness to undertake training).
  • Up-to-date training in immunisation and vaccination.
  • Experience in a general practice or community healthcare setting.
  • Good knowledge of safeguarding, confidentiality, and data protection.
  • Confident using clinical systems and electronic records.
Desirable
  • Phlebotomy and wound care experience.
  • Experience supporting QOF (Quality and Outcomes Framework) targets and recall systems.
  • Additional qualifications in chronic disease management or smoking cessation.
Personnel
Essential
  • Take reasonable care of his/her own safety and that of other persons who may be affected by his/her act or omission.
  • Co-operate with the practice to ensure all members of the team adheres to statutory regulations/policies and codes of practice and departments safety rules.
  • Maintain a caring environment through the support of colleagues.

This post is subject to the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act (Exceptions Order) 1975 and as such it will be necessary for a submission for Disclosure to be made to the Disclosure and Barring Service (formerly known as CRB) to check for any previous criminal convictions.
