Ward Manager - Acute MedicineThe closing date is 20 July 2026Job summaryAn exciting opportunity has arisen for an experienced and motivated nurse leader to join our Acute Medical Unit as a substantive Band 7 Ward Manager.
You will lead a dynamic 37-41 bedded ward delivering high-quality care to acutely unwell patients admitted directly from the Emergency Department. This is a fast-paced, rewarding environment where strong clinical leadership, decision-making, and a passion for patient flow are essential.
As Ward Manager, you will play a key role in driving standards of care, supporting and developing staff, and ensuring safe, effective, and compassionate care delivery. You will work closely with the multidisciplinary team to enhance patient experience, improve flow, and contribute to ongoing service development within acute medicine.

Main duties of the job- Act as role model, mentor and preceptor to the ward nursing team
- Ensure delivery of the Trusts Nursing Strategy at ward level
- Conduct oneself in accordance with the NMC Code of Conduct and Trust policies
- Responsible for nursing team adherence to Trust policies, procedures, guidelines and standards.
- Responsible for ensuring that care and advice to patients is of the highest quality, placing the needs of the patient, their relatives and carers at the centre of care delivery
- Ensure the assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation of evidence based, individualised patient care
- Have responsibility for the correct administration and custody of medicines according to Trust policy
- Deal with concerns raised by patients and visitors in a proactive manner and take remedial action as necessary
- Act as the patient's advocate
- Implement and sustain systems to maintain infection control and cleaning

Person SpecificationEducation/ qualificationsEssential- Registered Nurse (NMC register)
- Educated to degree level or equivalent
- Post registration qualification
- Mentorship & Assessment in the clinical area or equivalent
- Recognised management qualification or equivalent experience
DesirableExperienceEssential- Experience of managing /leading a team and co-ordinating workload
- Experience of staff/ HR, appraisals and budget management
- Change management
- Initiating investigations of incidents, accidents and complaints.
- 3 years in a medical assessment unit with at least 2 years at band 6
Desirable- Critical care or acute ward experience
