St Peter's Hospital is a specialist service supporting individuals living with degenerative neuropsychiatric conditions, acquired brain injuries, complex neurological disorders, dementia, and mental health conditions. We are looking for a compassionate and motivated Band 5 Occupational Therapist to join our multidisciplinary team and help people achieve greater independence, wellbeing, and quality of life.

Main duties of the job
Key Responsibilities

• Complete functional assessments using both top-down and bottom-up approaches.
• Assess and support activities of daily living, including washing, dressing, feeding, mobility, transfers, and community access.
• Deliver individual and group occupational therapy interventions.
• Support patients to maintain independence, social participation, and quality of life.
• Contribute to specialist rehabilitation programmes within neurological and mental health settings.
• Assist with assessment and provision of adaptive equipment and environmental modifications.
• Participate in community-based rehabilitation and risk assessments.
• Evaluate intervention outcomes and adapt treatment plans accordingly.
• Apply best practice and evidence-based approaches in all areas of practice.

Job responsibilities
St Peters Hospital specialises in supporting individuals with degenerative, neuropsychiatricconditions, complex neurological disorders and acquired brain injury. As a Senior, autonomous clinician, you will contribute to providing a professional, safe and effective Occupational Therapy service within the hospital setting of St Peters Hospital. This willinvolve managing a complex, specialised caseload, using evidence based/patient centred principles to assess health and wellbeing needs and physiological functioning, plan, implement and evaluate interventions.

Key Responsibilities & Duties
Health & Safety

• To ensure that ICG Health and Safety systems and policies are in place and operating.
• To ensure the services representation and participation in ICG Health and Safety processes.
• Ensure all equipment is compliant with legislation requirements and available for use

Clinical

• To provide clinical related occupational therapy intervention guided by the patients specific needs, wishes and aspirations.
• To complete bottom up and top-down assessments to assess for patients functional ability including but not limited to washing & dressing, transfers, showering/bathing, feeding, kitchen, vehicle, community mobility etc)
• To implement interventions either in groups or to individuals in close liaison with other disciplines involved in the patients care, having emphasis on multi-disciplinary teamwork with support from band 6/Lead as needed.
• To support with maintaining patients quality of life, social interactions with others, engagement through occupations both on site and in the community.
• To demonstrate best practice interventions within areas of mental health (schizophrenia, psychosis, bipolar, depression, anxiety etc) dementia, organic and acquired brain injury and neurorehabilitation.
• To be involved when appropriate in the assessment of aids/ adaptations to enable the patient to improve/ maintain own level of functional daily living skills.
• To practice in accordance with legislation according to your clinical area.
• To be competent in supporting patients into the community and risk assessing the environment appropriately with band 6/Lead guidance and supervision.
• To evaluate and modify interventions using appropriate outcome measures with support from band 6/Lead as needed.
• To be able to complete purchase orders on system when necessary.
• To be able to provide necessary basic and specialist equipment adaptions to support physical needs with support from band 6/Lead when highly specialist equipment is involved.
• To be proficient in manual handling techniques to support patients quality of life, independence and skills maintenance.

Communication

• Communicate with patients, using the most appropriate verbal, written or pictorial method, in a way that respects their view, autonomy and culture.
• Translate key Occupational Therapy messages into simple ideas and language that can be easily understood by the client group.
• Work collaboratively with all members of the clinical team and share information with the team members formally and informally, e.g. M.D.T., C.P.As.
• Share relevant information and knowledge within the professional group.
• Liaise with other departments within the service and beyond.

Documentation

• Complete all necessary clinical documentation in accordance with Iris Care Group and professional standards.
• Provide Occupational Therapy plans and/ or goals to support the care plan with band 6/Lead guidance and supervision.
• Provide written reports in accordance with hospital and professional standards for CPA reviews with band 6/Lead guidance and supervision

Clinical Governance and Quality Standards

• Understand and contribute to Clinical Governance and Quality Agenda Activity within the OT team.
• Completion of all statutory and mandatory training.
• Participate in completion of OT and wider organisation clinical audits with band 6/Lead guidance.

Research and Practice Development

• Promote and engage in practice development, evaluation, audit and research activities to implement evidence-based practice under band 6/Lead guidance and supervision.

Education

• Participate in the education and training of specialist equipment provided by OT to students, clinical colleagues and support staff.
• Participate in and contribute to continuing professional development activity.

Professional Ethics

• To adhere to relevant Health Profession Council regulations and other codes of professional conduct.
• Adhere to all organisational policies and procedures.
• To work within the provisions of the Mental Health Act (1983) when applicable.

Service Development

• Initiate and participate in development activities within the clinical area under band 6/Lead guidance and supervision.
• Ensure where possible patients are involved in the future service planning and delivery.
• To apply national guidelines / legislation to service provision

Professional Development

• Demonstrate commitment to ongoing professional development through participation in internal and external development opportunities identified in supervision and PDP.
• Maintain professional portfolio in line with Health Professions Council requirements.
• To review and reflect on own practice and performance through regular participation in professional/clinical supervision and appraisal
• Keep abreast of new initiatives and recommendations from relevant organisations ensuring that practice is evidence based and current.

• Able to communicate effectively with service users, carers and other professionals
• Understanding of mental health act and its application to practice
• Able to adhere to policies and procedures

Qualifications

• Diploma or Degree in Occupational Therapy
