The Isle of Wight NHS Trust is seeking an enthusiastic and forward-thinking Consultant in Care of the Elderly to join our ambitious and compassionate team at St Mary's Hospital. This is a unique opportunity to play a pivotal role in delivering high-quality geriatric care to a defined island population while helping to shape and develop services within an integrated healthcare system and we are looking for dynamic, motivated, visionary Geriatricians to help construct and develop an innovative department of Medicine for Older People.

These appointments are integral to serving our local population of older people, ensuring that they get the very highest quality care within their places of residence, through acute medical pathways and access to specialist departments and resources when appropriate.

We are committed to delivering excellent, evidence-based care and continuously improving services in line with national best practice and Comprehensive Geriatric Assessment (CGA) approach offering gold standard care for older adults. The successful candidate will join a motivated multidisciplinary team and have the opportunity to contribute significantly to the strategic direction of geriatric services across the Island.

Main duties of the job
This post will require you to work collaboratively as a team, working alongside our two established geriatricians, the wider multidisciplinary teams, specialist colleagues and the operational team. We are looking for people who have experience working across traditional health and social care boundaries.

All posts will include a chosen specialty area - we are particularly looking for Geriatricians with an interest in:

• Perioperative care,
• Ortho-geriatrics
• Frailty,
• General geriatrics,
• Movement disorders,
• Multi-morbidity including end stage organ failures (cardiac, renal, respiratory)

Unlike larger organisations where individual influence can be diluted, the very nature of the Isle of Wight NHS Trust means geriatric consultants can have a direct impact on the entire patient pathway. From emergency assessment and acute treatment through rehabilitation and community outpatient follow-up, consultants are able to drive improvements that translate rapidly into enhanced LOS improvements and, most importantly, better outcomes for patients.

Job responsibilities
Your Contribution:

• Provide comprehensive inpatient medical services for elderly patients including orthogeriatric.
• Take responsibility for the diagnosis and treatment of elderly patients.
• Undertake a weekly outpatient clinic (with potential for a rapid access clinic).
• Participate in a 1:11 Consultant general medical on-call rota (weekday advice/call-in 22:00-08:00).
• Provide professional supervision and management of junior medical staff.

Qualifications
Essential

• MBBS or equivalent.
• Membership with the relevant Royal College for Physicians.
• GMC registration and license to practice.
• Entry on the GMC Specialist Register in Geriatrics and general medicine via a. CCT (proposed CCT date must be within 6 months of interview), b. CESR or (c) European Community rights

Desirable

• Higher degree e.g MD, PhD, Masters in other subjects (Education leadership)

Experience and Skills
Essential

• Should have completed a recognised training programme in specialty appropriate for post
• Must be able to demonstrate a high level of clinical experience, expertise and competence in managing geriatric patients.
• Knowledge of current trends in speciality.
• IT skills.

Teaching
Essential

• Demonstrates an enthusiasm and ability to teach other clinicians both medical and non-medical

Audit and Research
Essential

• Evidence of participation in clinical audit relevant to specialty.
