Job summary
The Breast Service at Kingston & Richmond NHS Foundation Trust is based on the Kingston site.

The Service is provided by a Multidisciplinary Team comprising four Consultant Oncoplastic Breast Surgeons (3.2 WTE), two Consultant Medical Oncologists (joint posts with the Royal Marsden NHS Foundation Trust), four Consultant Breast Pathologists, six Consultant Breast Radiologists (each with additional specialty / cross-sectional interests, four Breast Clinical Nurse Specialists, one Nurse Consultant, four Advanced Nurse Practitioners (one post currently vacant), an Advanced Clinical Practitioner and one Surgical Care Practitioner.

A business case for a second Surgical Care Practitioner is in progress. . The weekly Multidisciplinary Meeting is also supported virtually by Consultant Clinical Oncologists from the Royal Marsden (RM), with radiotherapy delivered at the Chelsea or Sutton RM sites according to patient preference.

Chemotherapy is delivered on site at Kingston in the RM Chemotherapy Suite through the RM / Kingston Partnership Agreement.

The Service receives approximately 6300 referrals per year and treats over 300 newly diagnosed patients with breast cancer. Around 25-30% of breast cancer patients treated are referred from the Regional Breast Screening Services, the majority from the South West London Breast Screening Service and a smaller cohort from the Jarvis.

Main duties of the job
The post holder will work alongside the Breast Surgery Consultants to provide an elective service in breast surgery, ensuring implementation of national guidelines and local policies.

This will include the running of One Stop clinics, routine and complex follow-up clinics and engagement in Day Surgery and Main Theatre Operating lists.

Currently there is an alternate week Day Surgery list plus two synchronous all-day and one half day Main theatre lists, providing exposure to a wide range of oncoplastic procedures. Additional operating lists are also scheduled with moderate frequency in order to meet Cancer Waiting Time targets.

Working alongside the Consultants and Breast CNS team in clinics will provide training in planning appropriate oncological and reconstructive procedures, plus supporting and counselling patients in their treatment decision making.

The post holder will provide review where appropriate of inpatients requiring a breast opinion (though the majority will be assessed in a clinic setting) and supervise the Surgical Care Practitioner(s) in the pre and postoperative management of surgical patients, including those withcomplications.

The post holder will support the Nurse Consultant and ANPs in the management of patients with breast sepsis, plus assist with capacity for diagnostic punch and core biopsies as required.

There is no formal on call emergency commitment associated with this post.

Education/Qualifications
Essential
  • Full registration and a Licence to Practice with the General Medical Council
  • MRCS (or equivalent)
  • Higher degree in surgery (FRCS) with special interest in Breast surgery (or equivalent)

Desirable
  • Higher degree in research
  • Additional certificate in breast disease, oncology or imaging

Clinical Experience
Essential
  • At least 2 years' experience of training in breast surgery at registrar level
  • At least 1 year training in oncoplastic breast unit

Desirable
  • Post CCT

Management Skills
Essential
  • Evidence of team leadership and organisational skills
  • Ability to prioritise patients safely in high-volume breast clinics

Desirable
  • Running a one-stop breast clinic list efficiently
  • Interest in service development

Experience in Training, Audit and Research
Essential
  • Experience of clinical audit and quality improvement
  • Evidence of teaching medical students or junior colleagues

Desirable
  • Involvement in clinical trials or research projects including relevant research articles in peer-reviewed journals

Personal qualities
