Job summary
An exciting opportunity has arisen for an experienced and highly motivated Consultant Breast Radiographer to join our dynamic Breast Imaging Services at Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust.

Main duties of the job
This is a key role within our service, offering the opportunity to contribute to the delivery of high-quality, patient-centred care across both the breast screening and symptomatic pathways. Working as part of a multidisciplinary team, you will provide expert clinical practice, contributing to the diagnosis and management of breast disease whilst supporting service development, education, research, and clinical leadership.

The post holder will possess highly developed skills across all aspects of breast imaging and have extensive experience working as an advanced practitioner within a Breast Imaging Service. You will work alongside a team of Consultant Breast Radiographers, Consultant Radiologists, Specialist Doctors and Advanced Practitioners who work collaboratively to deliver a comprehensive, high-quality service.

We are seeking an individual with excellent organisational, communication and interpersonal skills who is committed to continuous professional development and supporting the development of others. The successful candidate will provide training, supervision and competency assessment for trainees and staff within the service.

Symptomatic Breast Imaging Service
The Symptomatic Breast Imaging Service is based at St James's University Hospital and forms an integral part of the Breast Outpatient Service, delivering comprehensive one-stop diagnostic clinics.

The service is busy and well established, assessing approximately 170200 new patients each week. In addition, the department provides imaging for breast cancer follow-up patients and family history surveillance programmes.

The unit offers a range of advanced imaging and interventional procedures, including
  • Vacuum-assisted biopsy.
  • Contrast-enhanced mammography.
  • Contrast-guided biopsy procedures.
  • Advanced ultrasound services.

Leeds and Wakefield Breast Screening Service
The Leeds and Wakefield Breast Screening Service provides breast screening across a large geographical area through a network of static screening sites and mobile mammography units.

The Breast Assessment Unit is based at Seacroft Hospital, delivering assessment clinics for women recalled following screening. The service provides comprehensive assessment using a range of imaging and diagnostic techniques, including:
  • Mammography.
  • Breast ultrasound.
  • Image-guided biopsy procedures.
  • Localisation procedures.
  • Multidisciplinary assessment and treatment planning.

The service is committed to delivering high-quality, evidence-based care in line with NHS Breast Screening Programme standards and plays an active role in education, training, quality improvement and research.

What you will bring to the role
The post holder will be able to act as an autonomous interventional practitioner , accountable for their own actions, working closely with Consultant Radiologists, Team Managers, mammographers and trainees.

Working within codes of practice and professional guidelines, the post holder will have freedom to act and assess, diagnose and treat a specialised caseload of patients, reporting their own findings and recommending further investigations.

The post holder will provide expert contribution and be a key member of staff in the planning of the interventional breast imaging lists with consultant radiologists, team managers and the principal radiographer.

The post holder will provide and maintain a quality interventional imaging service to agreed quality standards using evidence based practice, to assist in the formulation, implementation and monitoring of interventional imaging protocols.

The post holder will be responsible for the efficient and effective utilisation of all resources within their area of responsibility to ensure that agreed waiting list targets are met.

The post holder will be a point of contact and give specialist advice within their area of responsibility.

The post holder will participate in the 2WW pathway breast clinics.

The post holder will take a lead role in clinical research, audit and initiation of evidence based practice.

The post holder will be responsible for ensuring that agreed Trust protocols, standards of service and organisation of service are delivered across the area of specialist training.

The post holder will be expected to liaise closely with other departments and managers (within and outside Radiology) to ensure the smooth and efficient running of the service.

The post holder will be expected to act as a source of expert knowledge providing clinical and technical advice and training to clinical teams.

The post holder will be expected to be involved in service improvement and waste reduction to deliver national and local objectives and targets.
