Job summary
Axess sexual health is looking for an enthusiastic and motivated Healthcare Assistant to join our friendly and dynamic service. We are seeking someone with a genuine interest in sexual health who is committed to delivering high-quality, inclusive and patient-centred care. The role includes working across a range of community clinic locations, so flexibility and a willingness to travel are essential.

As part of our multidisciplinary team, you will support nurses, doctors and fellow HCAs in providing safe, confidential care. You will help ensure the smooth running of walk-in and appointment-based clinics, assist with clinical tasks, and maintain excellent infection-control standards. You will also support patients with reassurance, information and signposting, helping them feel respected and well cared for.

We are looking for someone with a positive, proactive attitude who is confident in fast-paced clinical environments. Strong communication skills, a non-judgemental approach and a commitment to learning are essential. Main duties of the job
According to service policy,

• Undertake pregnancy testing & venepuncture and any other procedure, which falls within your knowledge and competencies under the guidance and supervision of clinical staff.
• Manage fast-track clinics using electronic patient records ensuring all episodes are entered and coded safely and efficiently.
• Ensure all samples/specimens are recorded & transported in a timely and appropriate manner, according to service policy. Report any discrepancies to an appropriate team member.
• To maintain stock (clinical supplies) levels, identifying and reporting any discrepancies or cost savings to service manager.
• Ensure a clean & tidy environment within the clinical area and maintain housekeeping throughout.
• Support clinical delivery alongside dedicated sexual health clinical practitioners.
• Provide sexual health advice which supports the care, emotional well-being and education of patients.

Job responsibilities

• To provide and maintain an efficient and safe environment for clients and staff, reporting any potential safety issues to an appropriate team member and making suggestions for service improvement, according to Trust and service policies and procedures.
• To maintain high standards of infection control procedures according to Trust and service policies.
• To maintain client confidentiality at all times according to Trust and service policies.
• To act as a chaperone taking into account cultural and religious beliefs, as directed by clinical staff, whilst promoting a positive image of the service.
• Prioritise own workload and organise own work on a daily basis to ensure the smooth running of the service.
• Identify, report (and contribute to recording) to appropriate team member any Child Protection and Vulnerable adult issues observed during duties, according to legislation & Trust policy.
• Prepare equipment and clinical environment, and assist at clinical procedures as appropriate.
• To report sickness, absence and any accident/incident to the clinical manager or her/his deputy.
• To work within the community clinical settings.

Person Specification
Qualifications
Essential

• Educated to GCSE level or equivalent
• NVQ2 (healthcare)
• Care Certificate or equivalent experience

Desirable

• Evidence of working at or ability to achieve NVQ 3 Level

Experience
Essential

• Demonstrable experience working at Band 2 within a healthcare setting
• Previous experience of working with the public and/ or young people

Desirable

• Previous experience of working in other areas of sexual health or related services

Knowledge and Skills
Essential

• General understanding of sexual health
• Good Interpersonal and communication skills both written and verbal
• Ability to communicate well with vulnerable people from varying backgrounds and abilities and liaise with the multi-disciplinary teams.
• Evidence of ability to relate to the needs of young people
• Ability to work flexibly within a changing/evolving organisation
• Ability to work unsupervised, under own initiative and to self-motivate
• Willingness to undertake expanded roles including venepuncture, basic sample collection, point of care testing (e.g. pregnancy testing) microscopy and other tasks necessary to development of role following appropriate training
• Knowledge of Child Protection / Vulnerable adult issues
