Job summary
Band 6 Specialist Dietitian (Critical Care and HPB), Royal Liverpool University Hospital (LUHFT) part of the University Hospitals of Liverpool Group (UHLG).

Full time, permanent (37.5 hours).

An exciting opportunity has arisen for an enthusiastic Dietitian to join our friendly surgical team at LUHFT, to cover the Royal site. This Band 6 post is split between Critical Care (0.7 wte) and HPB (0.3 wte). You will be supported by Band 7 Leads in both areas alongside the wider surgical team.

Our new state-of-the-art Critical Care unit has 40 beds, providing care for some of the sickest patients in the region and our HPB unit is one of the largest clinical HPB units in the UK, managing HPB care for Merseyside, Cheshire, Isle of Man and North Wales.

The post holder will be part of a wider surgical team comprised of Specialist Dietitians for Nutrition Support, HPB, Colorectal and Liver surgery and will provide support for surgical band 6 and band 5 rotational staff as needed.

We welcome applications from suitably experienced Band 5 Dietitians and those already working at a Band 6 level who are enthusiastic to learn and are ready for a new challenge at a Band 6 level. Previous NHS clinical experience is essential alongside previous experience in Critical Care. There may be future possibilities for you to specialise in either Crit Care or HPB.

Main duties of the job
The post holder will be responsible for supporting the service in delivering dietetic services to the critical care and HPB patients based within the Royal Liverpool Hospital and also those attending the HPB dietetic outpatient clinics.

The primary role will be to provide nutritional treatment to inpatients as well as delivering outpatient clinics in HPB. The successful candidate will work together with the whole team, contributing to service improvement, training, audit and development of standards.

The post holder will be fully supported by the existing B7 dietitians and therapy management and will provide support and supervision to B5 and B3/4 dietetic assistant staff. You will also be involved in the supervision of students, linking in with universities to provide the best possible learning experience.

Job Summary:
To work with other health care professionals as part of a multidisciplinary team providing a high quality dietetic service to inpatients and outpatients of your clinical specialism. The role also involves education of staff and patients.

To provide factually accurate, unbiased evidence-based nutritional advice appropriate to the needs of the individual. Advice will be provided using a patient centred approach in the context of multi-disciplinary/multi-agency delivery plans.

Operational responsibilities include monitoring referrals and activity, prioritising caseload as necessary, evaluating activity, responding to service demands

The Dietitian will work with the team contributing to service improvement, training, development of protocols, policies, resources, standards and audit.

Person Specification
Qualifications
Essential
  • BSc in Nutrition and Dietetics or postgraduate Diploma
  • Current registration with HPC
  • Membership of BDA or equivalent professional indemnity

Desirable
  • Introductory level Clinical Supervisory Skills Training.

Experience
Essential
  • Broad clinical experience in at least 3 clinical areas, including medical and surgical patients
  • Experience of multi-disciplinary working
  • Experience and evidence of continuing professional development

Desirable
  • Experience of training student dietitians.
  • Experience of conducting audit

Knowledge
Essential
  • While able to work independently, ability to recognise own limitations and access advice and information appropriately

Skills
Essential
  • Communication skills, both written and verbal, to effectively convey information.
  • Problem solving skills.
  • Time management - able to prioritise work, respond appropriately to demands and keep to time in out patient setting
  • Good presentation skills.

Desirable
  • I.T. Skills - power-point, keyboard and email.
