Rotational Clinical Pharmacist (Band 6 to 7 progression)
Department: Pharmacy
Band 6 to 7 progression, £39,959 - £56,515 per annum, pro rata.
Hours: Full time, 37.5 per week, all MKUH roles will be considered for flexible working

Now is an excellent time to become part of the pharmacy team at MKUH; we are a friendly, forward-thinking department who continue to grow in both size and influence. At an organisational level, we are keen to embrace technology and the digital agenda to enhance working practices and have a well established electronic patient record which incorporates a full electronic prescribing and medicines administration system.
At a departmental level, we have been fortunate to receive significant investment in recent years, which in addition to growing our team, has led to a major departmental refurbishment, the replacement of our Pharmacy Robot, the creation of a new Pharmacy and Aseptic Unit in the Cancer Centre, and the opening of a new Outpatient Pharmacy.

Main duties of the job
Our services are evolving to provide our Pharmacists and Pharmacy Technicians with more time to work alongside patients while supporting our medical and nursing colleagues. Our commitment is to ensure that every patient receives safe, high-quality care, placing our patients at the heart of our mission.
This role is a compelling career opportunity for a skilled and dedicated pharmacist to join our hardworking, forward-looking, and innovative pharmacy team. It would be ideal for a newly qualified pharmacists looking for an opportunity to develop their career within a hospital setting. You will join our team in a Band 6 role and following the successful completion of your probationary period you will agree a number of objectives with your line manager and the Pharmacy Education Team which you will need to achieve in order to progress into a Band 7 role; these objectives will include both workplace tasks and self-directed learning with a suitable academic education programme.

We are also proud to offer a growing portfolio of specialist services. In January 2025 we opened our state-of-the-art Radiotherapy Centre, bringing advanced cancer treatment closer to home. Our services also include neonatology, specialist surgical care, and a wide range of diagnostics, supported by the new Community Diagnostic Centre at Whitehouse Health Centre. We have just opened the Oak Wards - a new ward block featuring two 24-bed wards.

Job responsibilities

You will become part of a growing team of Pharmacists and Pharmacy Technicians who support patient care across a wide range of clinical specialties within the Trust. With the support of our Specialist Clinical Pharmacists and our Principal Pharmacists across a range of clinical specialities, you will deliver high-quality, patient-centred care. In addition to delivering ward-based pharmaceutical care and providing clinical support to the dispensary, you will have the opportunity to get involved in a wide range of medicines optimisation and medicines safety activities as part of your wider medicines management role.
This role is crucial to the delivery, development, and evaluation of pharmaceutical services across the hospital. It plays a key part in helping divisions optimise medicines use within available resources.
Our standard working hours now consist of four long days per week; Saturdays, Sundays, and Bank Holidays are worked on a rota basis. After a period of induction and training, you will contribute to the pharmacy out-of-hours on-call service.

Person Specification
Qualifications and knowledge
Essential
  • B.Sc. / B.Pharm. / M.Pharm
  • Registered with GPhC
  • Evidence of on-going CPD (in line with GPhC requirements)

Desirable
  • Postgraduate Certificate in Clinical Pharmacy (or equivalent)
  • Postgraduate Diploma in Clinical Pharmacy (or equivalent eg. NQP/GLF)
  • Member of RPS

Experience
Essential
  • Experience working as part of a multi disciplinary team to provide patient care
  • Knowledge of the medical management of disease in a range of the specialties

Desirable
  • Post registration experience in a hospital-based clinical pharmacy post
  • Experience of clinical audit work.
  • An awareness of current national standards, guidelines and service delivery issues.
  • Experience of Medicines Information.
  • Evidence of influencing medicines use to optimise care and help clinicians manage expenditure
  • Evidence of experience managing prioritisation in relation to the use of new drugs and new uses for drugs
  • Evidence of significant contribution to innovative or developmental roles and activities within pharmacy
  • Evidence of a good understanding of medicines management issues at the interfaces between primary, secondary and tertiary care
