Job Summary
The Southampton Oncology Centre provides highly specialised radiotherapy treatments for a variety of tumour sites. The centre covers a tertiary referral catchment area, including the specialist areas of Neuro-oncology, Total Body Irradiation and Paediatric services. The post holder will be responsible for the management & day-to-day running of the treatment or pre-treatment unit. Therapeutic doses of high energy radiation are administered to patients using highly complex multi energy /modality linear accelerators. 6 in the Southampton Oncology Centre. Radiotherapy Treatment is planned using acquired images from a dedicated CT scanner. Radiation treatment is planned according to tumour site and critical structure delineation. All therapy radiographers are required to assess, plan and treat patients in accordance with broad occupational policies. Each radiographer works with autonomy for practice and works as part of a team who deliver treatment to a caseload of around 40 patients a day.

Main Duties of the Job
  • To work with the designated Therapy Radiography teams in planning and treatment to ensure that high quality care, good communication, excellent clinical skills and treatment delivery are optimal.
  • To provide highly specialist information regarding radiotherapy treatment to patients. To take a lead role in the patient process for all patients attending the Radiotherapy Treatment Unit, ensuring good liaison with patients and carers and all staff involved in their care.
  • The post holder will be responsible for the workload of the unit and the management of the Radiographers assigned to the unit on a daily basis in liaison with the Band 7 Radiographer. To supervise junior staff members, Assistant Practitioners, Radiotherapy helpers and student radiographers.
  • To be a clinical leader responsible for the resolution of treatment issues ensuring that correct reporting mechanisms are utilised and that quality of care to patients is optimal.
  • To provide advice regarding future management of a range of complex radiotherapy related situations.
  • To consider treatment and planning options available to the patient and act in accordance with guidelines as an autonomous practitioner.
  • To work closely with the designated treatment/planning Band 7 and medical physicist to ensure that care, communication and service delivery are seamless.
  • To be responsible for the administration of therapeutic doses of radiation to patients as prescribed by the clinical oncologist.

Person Specification
Qualifications
Essential
  • Health and physical abilities sufficient for the post (if necessary with reasonable adjustments with respect to the Equality Act/Disability Discrimination Act).
  • Degree in Therapeutic Radiography, or Diploma of College of Radiographers
  • Defined area of specialist practice/experience with caseload management.
  • Project work / Evidence of further study
  • Higher degree / Diploma in Management.
  • Project management/educational experience
  • Understanding of wider Radiotherapy agenda e.g. Radiotherapy specialised commissioning and service specifications.

Desirable
  • Experience and practice with the latest technological advances
  • Evidence of some teaching / training/ presentation skills.
  • Evidence of multi-disciplinary practice.
