Job Summary
A Surgical Same Day Emergency Care (SDEC) service provides rapid assessment, diagnosis, treatment, and management of patients presenting with acute surgical conditions who may not require overnight admission. The aim is to deliver timely care, reduce unnecessary hospital admissions, and improve patient flow through the acute surgical pathway. To assess, coordinate, and deliver high-quality care for patients presenting with emergency surgical conditions, ensuring safe and effective management within a same-day treatment model.

Main Duties of the Job
Clinical Care
  • Assess patients presenting with acute surgical conditions.
  • Perform and document comprehensive clinical assessments.
  • Monitor patient condition and escalate concerns appropriately.
  • Administer medications, treatments, and interventions as prescribed.
  • Support diagnostic investigations, including blood tests, imaging, and specialist reviews.
  • Assist with minor procedures where appropriate.

Patient Flow and Coordination
  • Facilitate rapid assessment and treatment pathways.
  • Coordinate patient journeys through SDEC to ensure timely decision-making.
  • Liaise with emergency departments, surgical teams, radiology, and other specialties.
  • Arrange admissions, transfers, or discharges as required.
  • Ensure effective bed management and patient flow.

Job Responsibilities
The post holder is responsible as a registered, accountable and autonomous nurse to act in the best interests of patients at all times and take responsibility for own actions and decisions. You will be responsible for planning, delivering and supervising safe and compassionate care, whilst evaluating the effectiveness of care. You will be required to demonstrate leadership qualities and be open, transparent and trustworthy.The post holder will support staff in the development of clinical procedures, protocols and practice to ensure the effective delivery of service to patients within the Trust. You will be required to work as a member of the multi-disciplinary team and undertake delegated tasks from the ward manager/charge nurse.The post holder will always work within the NMCs Code of Professional Conduct

Person Specification
Experience
Essential
  • Experience working within a clinical area
  • Experience in delivering patient care

Desirable
  • Acute hospital experience
  • SDEC/ED experience

Qualifications
Essential
  • Registered Nurse with a diploma/degree or relevant experience

Skills
Essential
  • Excellent communication skills both written and verbal with the ability to overcome barriers to communication
