Job summary
Unlock your potential in Haematology with a pivotal role at Charing Cross Hospital. We are seeking an ambitious and forward-thinking Senior Biomedical Scientist to join our dynamic team, an excellent opportunity for experienced Band 6 scientists ready to step up, or Band 7 professionals looking to broaden their experience in a progressive environment.

We are looking for someone who brings more than technical expertise, someone motivated to make a meaningful impact on patient care and thrive in an increasingly digital laboratory landscape. You will hold HCPC registration and have substantial post-registration experience in Haematology and morphology. Strong technical capability, combined with excellent communication, interpersonal, and IT skills, will enable you to work effectively both independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team.

You will contribute to the delivery and continuous improvement of high-quality laboratory services, ensuring the best possible support for clinical teams and patient care. You will be actively involved in maintaining and developing quality management systems, supporting compliance with UKAS accreditation standards, and driving service excellence.

The role is primarily based at Charing Cross Hospital; however, where there is an operational need and as a further development opportunity, you may be required to work at and support service delivery, training, and quality aspects within one of the other Haematology Laboratories across NWLP.
Main duties of the job
  • Manage daily operations of a laboratory section under the Laboratory Manager'sguidance, ensuring efficient service delivery.
  • Collaborate with team members to provide a professional clinical laboratory service andsupport departmental objectives.
  • Develop professional expertise and specialist skills, while training and supervising staffto uphold high standards.
  • Coordinate specialist clinical technical and scientific services, including research andaudits, while fostering a culture of quality compliance with accrediting and regulatorystandards.

NWLP Induction
The NWLP induction will run on the first Monday of each month (provided it does not fall on a bank holiday) and includes laboratory training (for relevant laboratory roles). All new staff must attend the NWLP induction during their first week with NWLP.

Person Specification
Education / Qualifications
Essential
  • HCPC Registration
  • MSc, or IBMS Higher Specialist Diploma, or any of the IBMS higher qualifications
  • 2 years practical experience at band 6 or equivalent, post specialist HCPC registration in relevant discipline

Desirable
  • Management qualification or relevant experience

Skills/knowledge/abilities
Essential
  • Practical analytical skills associated with diagnostic laboratory work
  • Demonstrate a commitment to service improvement and innovative practice

Experience
Essential
  • Ability to develop and write policies and procedures (e.g. Standard Operating Procedures), relating to specialty section
  • Evidence of experience of quality management systems, audits and document control
  • Previous experience in a large busy pathology laboratory
  • Able to supervise more junior staff in a professional and competent manner

Desirable
  • Experience of Audit assessment
