Advanced Clinical Practitioner - Benign Urology (Band 8a)

Oxford University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust is seeking an exceptional Advanced Clinical Practitioner to help shape the future of our Benign Urology Service.

Working across the four pillars of Advanced Clinical Practice - Clinical Practice, Leadership, Education and Research - you will provide expert autonomous assessment, diagnosis, treatment and follow-up for patients with benign urological conditions, while leading service improvement, innovation and pathway development.

Main duties of the job
Working in partnership with the Urology Clinical Lead, Matron, Operational Service Manager, and multidisciplinary colleagues, the post holder will work across organisational boundaries to deliver high-quality services that meet local and national strategic objectives, quality standards, and performance targets.

The post holder will function as an autonomous advanced clinical practitioner, undertaking comprehensive assessment, diagnosis, investigation, treatment, and follow-up of patients with benign urological conditions. They will manage complex clinical presentations, make independent clinical decisions, and support the delivery of streamlined patient pathways to improve access, efficiency, and patient outcomes.

As a clinical leader within the benign nursing team, the post holder will contribute to the day-to-day operational management of services, supporting the delivery of activity, quality, workforce, and financial objectives. They will act as a key resource for specialist knowledge and clinical expertise, providing support, supervision, and mentorship to nursing and allied health professional colleagues.

The post holder will lead and participate in service development, audit, quality improvement, and research activities to ensure practice remains evidence-based and responsive to patient needs. They will play a pivotal role in educating and developing staff, promoting professional growth and supporting the future workforce.

Job responsibilities
Practice in compliance with their respective registrations code of professional conduct, being responsible and accountable for their decisions, actions, or omissions at this level of advanced practice Demonstrates a critical understanding of their advanced level of responsibility and autonomy, within the limits of their own capability, to include when working with complexity, risk or uncertainty in undifferentiated patient consultations

Facilitates own professional judgment identifying when to escalate and seek senior support/guidance, critically reflecting on practice, self-awareness, emotional intelligence

Delivers effective communication skills with colleagues both internally and/or externally, in verbal, non-verbal and written communication methods, adapting to changing parameters as required; which includes thorough accurate documentation in patient records as required

Provides and receives highly sensitive, complex or contentious information relating to patient care, and communicates information to patients, families or carers with respect, compassion and empathy, including breaking bad news or facilitating difficult conversations with respect and compassion

Deliverers a high degree of proficiency and clinical acumen in relation to decision-making skills, to inform clinical reasoning approaches when dealing with differentiated and undifferentiated presentations and complex situations; synthesising information from multiple sources to make appropriate, evidence-based judgements and/or diagnoses, treating, discharging, referring to alternative specialities or escalating cares as required

Able to competently perform a range of clinical procedures and lead diagnostic investigations, as required by the service and the scope of practice for the role, including but not limited to flexible cystoscopy, Urodynamics, Video Urodynamics, Mens Health, Bladder botox and Lithotripsy.

Uses own professional judgement to manage risk appropriately, especially where there may be complexity and uncertainty, prioritising the safety and wellbeing of individuals, families and carers

Acts as a clinical role model/advocate/leader, innovating and delivering care that is responsive to changing requirements, informed by local service and local population health needs, external agencies and/or wider networks

Commits to a culture of life-long learning, maintaining a professional portfolio of evidence relating to scope of practice, service specific capabilities and competencies, relevant to the roles clinical setting, in line with any relevant service specific curriculum frameworks or credentials (with NHSE or other professional bodies where relevant, e.g. RCEM, FICM, BAPM, RCPCH, RCOS, RPS or other).

Leadership and Management
The AP post holder will practice with knowledge, skills and behaviours which
  • Initiates and develops effective relationships, fostering clarity of the AP role within teams and networks, to encourage productive and efficient working practices
  • Role-models the values of the OUH, demonstrating a person-centred approach to service delivery, quality improvement, leadership and management
  • Establishes own scope of practice within legal, ethical, professional and organisational policies, governance frameworks and procedures; with a focus on managing risk, upholding safety and delivering high quality care
  • Contributes to service development as part of the MDT, advocating for Advanced Clinical Practice roles as part of workforce transformation and innovative change, to best meet patient, service, organisational and local population needs
  • Evaluates own practices as an AP, participating in MDT and team evaluations, recognising the impact of advanced clinical practice on service function, effectiveness and quality (e.g. care outcomes, patient experience and safety)
  • Contributes to, or facilitates the clinical supervision and wellbeing support of peers, trainee APs (tAPs), other members of the MDT or students as required within services
  • Actively engages in and facilitates peer review to inform own and others practice, formulating and implementing strategies to act on key learnings and making improvements, supporting ongoing CPD/supervision with peers and clinical/medical supervisors
  • Actively seeks feedback and involvement from individuals, families, carers and colleagues to inform own development and/or service developments in practice
  • Demonstrates team leadership, resilience and determination as an AP to peers (including juniors), whilst utilising management skills in situations that are unfamiliar, complex or unpredictable, supporting and instilling confidence in juniors/peers
  • Remains adaptable to change, continually developing own practice in response to changing health policies, new treatments, population needs or social challenges
  • Participates in clinical governance reviews and the investigation of clinical incidents and serious incidents; leads and facilitates others to share lessons learned adapt systems and processes accordingly
  • Supports team members from a managerial perspective including direct line management responsibilities (where required), such as supporting wellbeing, team member professional development, appraisals and conduct or performance management, or absence management and support.
  • Recognises the critical importance of wellbeing in self and others, seeking to identify and manage stressors or pressures to promote health and wellbeing

Education
The AP post holder will practice with knowledge, skills and behaviours which
  • Critically assess and address own CPD learning needs as an established AP, working to a personal development plan that reflects the breadth of professional development across the four pillars of advanced clinical practice, relevant to own clinical service
  • Critically reflects to maximise clinical skills and knowledge development, with evidence demonstrated through maintenance of own professional portfolio of evidence
  • Engages with performance reviews and appraisal processes, as required in own clinical service area and in line with OUH requirements
  • Advocates for, and contributes to, a culture of departmental, service, and organisational learning and improvement, to inspire future and existing staff
  • Delivers education for trainees, peers, members of the MDT, external courses, conferences, or via HEIs, within own scope of capability and competence; utilising teaching skills to facilitate education and learning through a variety of methods (face to face/virtual/lectures/simulations/publications etc) and seeking to instil confidence in others and share best practices
  • Contributes to and demonstrates flexibility towards Trust teaching/supervision priorities in line with own competencies, capabilities and any dynamic Trust priorities, such as at times of surge (e.g. Winter Pressures, Activity Surge or Pandemics)

Research
The AP post holder will practice with knowledge, skills and behaviours which
  • Develops and promotes a knowledge rich enquiry culture where research values are fostered, promoted and encouraged
  • Engages in research activities, upholding good research practice guidelines, in order to develop evidence-based strategies that can be applied to enhance quality, safety, productivity, value or wellbeing
  • Evaluates and audits own clinical practice, selecting and applying valid, reliable methods, then acting on the findings as appropriate with support as required, measuring value and impact of their Advanced Clinical Practice role
  • Develops and embeds robust local governance systems and systematic documentation processes, keeping the need for modifications under critical review in practice
  • Critically appraises and synthesises the outcomes of relevant research and evaluations, using results to underpin own practice and inform that of others
  • Identifies gaps in knowledge or evidence bases, and explores how these may be addressed via safe and pragmatic solutions, seeking to understand needs for further research to strengthen evidence
  • Links professional capabilities in clinical practice to relevant, robust and valid research, evidenced in own professional portfolio of Advanced Clinical Practice
  • Contributes to service or organisational research activities, which may include being involved as an educator, recruiter, investigator, and/or developing bids to apply for research funding
  • Facilitates collaborative links between clinical practice and research teams, through proactive engagement, and networking with academic, clinical and other active researchers
  • Disseminates best practice research findings and quality improvement projects, participating in local evidence Journal Clubs or relevant research-based forums, or nationally at relevant conferences or learning events
