Locum Consultant in Limb Reconstruction and Trauma Surgery.

Applications are invited for the above post across both the Nuffield Orthopaedic Centre, Windmill Rd, Oxford & the Orthopaedic Trauma Department at the John Radcliffe Hospital, Headley Way, Headington, Oxford, OX3 9DU.

We are looking for a candidate with both Limb reconstruction and Orthopaedic Trauma with a proven track record of delivering limb reconstruction in both elective and trauma setting, and experience of delivery of orthopaedic trauma surgery in the major trauma centre setting at consultant level. The appointee will work as part of a dedicated orthopaedic trauma team in a Major Trauma Centre, serving a catchment population of 3 million with a substantial tertiary workload. This is integral to this appointment, and applicants will need to demonstrate fellowship level training in complex Limb Reconstruction and Orthopaedic trauma surgery. We are looking for an applicant who is a team player and has relevant experience.

The appointee will be expected to participate in the on-call rota and may be required to work on any other site as required by the OUH Trust in the future.

Main duties of the job
The new appointee will form part of a team, managing patients with musculoskeletal trauma. The appointee will have individual consultant responsibilities, but these will be performed within a team environment, which provides excellent opportunities for further personal and professional development.

The new post holder will be treated equitably in this regard with respect to his/her consultant colleagues. The post is suitable for a fully trained orthopaedic surgeon, with relevant experience from the UK or abroad, who wishes to practice their skills in the management of musculoskeletal trauma. We are looking for an applicant who is a team player and has relevant experience in both the management of limb reconstruction and complex trauma surgery.

Teaching/Research
Oxford University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust is a teaching hospital Trust, and the post-holder will be required to participate in teaching students, training junior doctors and in clinical examinations. It is expected that this will be an integral part of everyday clinical activity. The post-holder's contribution to teaching, training and research will be included in the regular job plan review.

Both the Limb Reconstruction Unit and the Orthopaedic Trauma unit are some of the most active units for clinical trials worldwide. It is expected that the post-holder will contribute to this activity.

Job description
Job responsibilities
The post has responsibilities between trauma and limb reconstruction. The John Radcliffe Trauma Service provides a consultant based care for the local population of Oxfordshire and Thames Valley Major Trauma Network. The new appointee will form part of a team, managing patients with Musculo-skeletal trauma. The limb reconstruction service is based at the Nuffield Orthopaedic Centre and specialises in the management of non-union, bone infection, post-traumatic deformities and sees in excess of 2,000 patients annually.

The appointee will have individual consultant responsibilities, but these will be performed within a team environment, which provides excellent opportunities for further personal and professional development.

The post would be suitable for a fully trained Orthopaedic surgeon, with relevant experience from the UK or abroad, who wishes to practice and develop their skills in the management of Musculo-skeletal trauma and limb reconstruction, with a strong focus on the management of bone infection and fracture related infection. It is desirable that the candidate can demonstrate fellowship level training in major Orthopaedic trauma, and limb reconstruction surgery, with experience in managing bone infection.

Qualifications
Essential

• Full GMC with licence to practice
• FRCS (Tr & Orth) or equivalent overseas qualification
• CCT in Trauma & Orthopaedic Surgery; OR Registration on GMC Specialist Register in Trauma & Orthopaedic Surgery

Experience
Essential

• To specialist level or equivalent (6 years)
• 6-12 months as Clinical Fellow or equivalent in a Major Trauma / Level 1 Centre
• 6-12 months experience as a Clinical Fellow or equivalent in Limb Reconstruction

Skills & Knowledge
Essential

• Excellent leadership skills. Evidence of ability to lead a clinical team at the level of a consultant in a teaching hospital
• Effective administrative and time management skills. Training in clinical management
• Experience of formal and informal contributions to teaching and training of undergraduates and trainees.
• Good spoken and written English. Highly developed communication and interpersonal skills to undertake effectively the role of consultant in a large teaching hospital
• Knowledge of the organisation of the NHS and the Government's agenda for its modernisation
• Evidence of effective and sustained contribution to clinical governance, clinical risk management and clinical audit activities
