Job summaryThe post-holders will have responsibility for Plastic Surgery specialising in Trauma and general Plastic Surgery. You will benefit from a collaborative environment that fosters strong working relationships between Plastic Surgery and other specialist services. The department provides excellent support and mentoring for new consultants, ensuring a smooth transition and integration into the team.
The appointee will join a dynamic and enthusiastic team of limb reconstructive surgeons who enjoy an excellent collaborative relationship with their orthopaedic colleagues. The team forms part of the John Radcliffe's Major Trauma Centre and is known for its innovative approach and commitment to excellence. It routinely uses the BSSH hand trauma triage algorithms through an integrated online referral service thereby reducing the patient footfall to clinic and allowing timely consultant review of decisions made by junior staff. Plastics Trauma consultants lead the service for both upper and lower limb trauma.
This recruitment is intended to expand consultant capacity to utilise the additional operating provision created by regular all-day general anaesthetic lists within the new Surgical Elective Centre (SEC) at the John Radcliffe Hospital in Oxford, due to open in summer 2026.
Main duties of the jobThe post-holders' duties will be primarily at the John Radcliffe Hospital in Oxford, but it is a condition of the appointment that the post-holder will be willing to work in any of the Trust's locations and its partner hospitals. Flexible working is essential.

Job responsibilitiesThe post-holder will join a dedicated team of six Plastic Surgeons with responsibility for trauma care, including reconstructive surgery of both the upper and lower limbs, as well as contributing to the Oxford Major Trauma Centre. The role will also include responsibility for general plastic surgery services at the John Radcliffe Hospital, alongside participation in the on-call rota (currently 1 in 14).
The Department of Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery provides a comprehensive reconstructive service to Oxford and the surrounding region. The service is consultant-led. Current consultant-delivered services include trauma and reconstructive surgery, craniofacial surgery, cleft lip and palate, upper limb surgery, bone infection, sarcoma, breast reconstruction, skin cancer, autologous tissue transplantation, head and neck cancer reconstruction, and hypospadias. The department currently holds Burn Facility status within the London and South-East Burn Network. We are fortunate to have co-located facilities within a modern building on the John Radcliffe Hospital site, including offices, outpatient clinics, theatres, adult and paediatric wards, and day case units. The Head and Neck Unit is based within the Cancer Centre at the nearby Churchill Hospital. The department also has a significant presence at the Nuffield Orthopaedic Centre (NOC), where the plastic surgery team contributes to hand surgery, and provides reconstructive support to both the Bone Infection Unit and Sarcoma services.
Person SpecificationQualifications/TrainingEssential- Full GMC registration and licence to practise
- Basic medical qualifications
- FRCS Plast or its equivalent
- To have completed training in Plastic Surgery
- Experience of working in the NHS at registrar level (ST8) or higher
Desirable- Higher medical degree
- Further training at Fellowship level in Trauma and microsurgery
ExperienceEssential- Broad experience in Plastic Surgery Trauma
- Competence in all aspects of microsurgical reconstruction.
- Competence in all aspects of Plastic Surgery lower and upper limb trauma, including hands
- Evidence of ability to make decisions at consultant level and to manage complex clinical problems.
Desirable- Experience of working at consultant level in a major trauma centre
- Leadership at consultant level of the management of complex trauma in a major trauma center
Skills and KnowledgeEssential- Excellent leadership skills. Evidence of ability to lead a clinical team at the level of a consultant in a teaching hospital.
- Evidence of significant contribution to successful teamwork
- Experience of formal and informal contributions to teaching and training.
- Evidence of effective and sustained contribution to clinical governance, clinical risk management and clinical audit activities
