Practice Development & Education Lead (RN/ODP) who is credible, dynamic, motivated and well organised, to lead the delivery of high-quality clinical practice and education within our operating theatre services.
This is an exciting opportunity to join our
diverse and dynamic theatres teams, working across
19 operating theatres within two departments, with further expansion planned. The
John Radcliffe Main Operating Theatre Department comprises five theatres providing routine and emergency surgery. The
West Wing Operating Theatre Department includes 14 theatres delivering specialist surgery for adults and children. Specialties include ENT, Ophthalmology, Neurology, Children's Orthopaedics and General Surgery, Plastics and Maxillofacial surgery. In addition, the
Surgical Elective Centre, currently under construction, will add a further
seven theatres to the directorate, delivering specialist services including vascular, spinal, plastics and maxillofacial surgery.
Main duties of the jobEducation & Development:We have a
dedicated and experienced education team, supported by a comprehensive education strategy that underpins the development of staff across all grades within theatres. This includes:
- A supportive learning environment for staff
- In-house perioperative courses
- PG Cert Advanced Perioperative Care
- Support with revalidation
- Leadership and career development opportunities
Experienced staff are actively encouraged and supported to further develop through the wide range of educational and experiential learning opportunities available.
The Role:As Practice Development & Education Lead, you will:
- Share clinical skills and knowledge in line with agreed education plans
- Support ongoing clinical competency validation, core skills and essential training
- Focus on improving the quality, safety and efficiency of clinical care through education, enhancing positive patient outcomes
- Deliver classroom-based education and work directly with staff in the clinical environment to ensure competency assessments are completed in a timely manner
- Play a key role in supporting and facilitating student placements, working closely with supervisors, assessors and university partners including Oxford Brookes University and Bucks New University
- Support and line manager Band 6 Clinical Practice Educators

Experience of teaching, supervising and assessing healthcare students in the practice setting is essential, alongside excellent communication and interpersonal skills. The successful candidate will be supported in achieving a
Masters level qualification in education if they do not already hold this qualification.
You will lead on
theatre practice development and education across the operating theatres of Oxford University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, with a particular focus on the proactive development of new staff, student Operating Department Practitioners and student nurses.

Person SpecificationEssential- First degree (Nursing/ODP/Perioperative)
- Practice Assessor Course
- Minimum 3 to 4 years recent clinical experience in theatres
- Experience supporting students in the clinical area
- Qualification for theatre speciality
Desirable- PG Cert/Dip/Masters Education
