Job summary
The Stroke Unit of Portsmouth Hospitals University Trust is one of the busiest centres in the UK. We had over 5000 referrals between 2024 -2025 and thrombolysed over 200 patients, with nearly 10 % going for mechanical thrombectomy at the regional specialist centre in Southampton.

Main duties of the job
We are looking to recruit an enthusiastic Registrar in Stroke Medicine to work in a well-motivated team of 6 other Consultants (some locum), and another Speciality Grade Doctor in Stroke Medicine. There is ample opportunity and encouragement to pursue, service quality improvement projects, teaching, and supervision.

Job description
Job responsibilities
The Stroke Unit of Portsmouth Hospitals University Trust is one of the busiest centres in the UK. We had over 5000 referrals between 2024 -2025 and thrombolysed over 200 patients, with nearly 10 % going for mechanical thrombectomy at the regional specialist centre in Southampton. Our reach and ability to open the revascularisation window has now been extended with our CT perfusion systems being online. We have a 34-bed stroke unit in which there are 12 designated HASU beds, as well as a newly purpose built 30 bed rehab unit with 2 dedicated neuro-gymnasiums, and a 7-day outpatient TIA service. Currently, we are in partnership with Isle of Wight NHS Trust providing with consultant and senior support on a daily basis through out of hours thrombolysis on call cover. We are looking to recruit an enthusiastic Registrar in Stroke Medicine to work in a well-motivated team of 6 other Consultants (some locum), and another Speciality Grade Doctor in Stroke Medicine. There is ample opportunity and encouragement to pursue, service quality improvement projects, teaching, and supervision. The post holder will be involved in a 5 days a week 8am-5pm scheduled stroke rota to support an acute stroke response team, TIA clinics, acute stroke and stroke rehabilitation wards. There will be no requirement to contribute to the night on-call rota, however the post holder will need to support our Stroke Nurse Specialists and Stroke Consultants in the Emergency Department when on acute day duties. The Post holder will need to triage and review patients in the TIA clinic through the week also to take the ward-based responsibilities when needed. The post holder will be expected to contribute to education of our junior medical and non-medical therapy and nursing teams.

Person Specification
Qualifications
Essential
  • Full GMC registration with a full medical licence to practice. Primary medical degree recognised by the GMC. Some Stroke medicine experience.

Desirable
  • Skills to interpret brain stroke related images like CT, MRI, CTA and CT perfusion

Experience
Essential
  • Understanding the current developments within the field of Acute Stroke Medicine and Rehabilitation, and being able to apply with best evidence based practice. Essential medical skills and competencies in recognising and dealing with most frequent stroke related medical conditions and complications.

Desirable
  • Regular teaching and education of medical and non-medical teams. Quality improvement or audit relevant to the field.
