Job summary
Laurel Ward is a specialist older adult inpatient service providing high-quality assessment, treatment, and recovery-focused care for individuals with functional mental health conditions and organic presentations, including dementia.

The Charge Nurse will provide visible clinical leadership during shifts, ensuring safe, effective, and person-centred care for older adults with complex mental health and physical health needs. The post-holder will act as a role model, support junior staff, and contribute to maintaining high standards of clinical practice, safety, and therapeutic engagement.

Working closely with the Ward Manager and multidisciplinary team, the Charge Nurse will support the coordination of daily ward activity, uphold governance standards, and ensure that the ward environment promotes dignity, safety, and compassionate care in line with the Trust's values and RDaSH's 28 Promises.

Main duties of the job
  • To lead shifts and oversee day-to-day clinical activity, ensuring safe staffing, effective delegation, and clear communication.
  • To support the Ward Manager in maintaining high standards of clinical care, documentation, and evidence-based practice
  • To provide clinical supervision, mentorship, and support to junior nursing staff and healthcare assistants.
  • To ensure robust risk assessment and management for older adults with cognitive impairment, frailty, and complex mental health needs.
  • To contribute to safeguarding processes, MCA/DoLS compliance, and Mental Health Act responsibilities.
  • To work collaboratively with MDT colleagues, families, carers, and external agencies to support assessment, treatment, and safe discharge planning.
  • To participate in audits, incident reviews, and quality improvement initiatives aligned to service priorities.
  • To maintain a safe physical environment through regular checks, ligature audits, and prompt reporting of estates issues.
  • To uphold Trust policies, CQC standards, and clinical governance requirements.

Person Specification
Qualifications
Essential
  • Registered Mental Health Nurse (NMC)
  • Mentorship/ Practice Assessor qualification

Desirable
  • Evidence of Post-Registration study at Level 6
  • Leadership or Management Training
  • Training in dementia care, frailty, or older adult mental health

Experience
Essential
  • Significant post-registration experience in mental health
  • Experience working with older adults, dementia, or organic mental health
  • Experience leading shifts or supervising staff
  • Experience managing complex clinical risk
  • Experience contributing to audits, governance, or QI projects

Desirable
  • Experience in inpatient mental health settings

Knowledge
Essential
  • In-depth understanding of older adult mental health
  • Knowledge of dementia, frailty, and organic presentations
  • Understanding of safeguarding legislation
  • Knowledge of MCA, DoLS, and Mental Health Act
  • Understanding of CQC standards and inpatient regulatory requirements
  • Knowledge of clinical governance and incident management

Desirable
  • Understanding of evidence-based interventions for older adults

Skills

  • Strong clinical leadership skills
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to manage complex risk and make sound clinical decisions
