About us
The Care of the Elderly (COE) Department at North Middlesex University Hospital is a key pillar of the Medicine & Urgent Care Services Division. We are proud to provide high quality, person-centred care to one of London's most diverse communities, with a strong emphasis on innovation, integration, and multidisciplinary working.

Over a third of the hospital's inpatients are under the care of a geriatrician, reflecting the central role we play in the organisation. We work across the acute and community interface, driving improvements in frailty recognition, early intervention, and discharge planning.

Since 2019, we have partnered with the Royal Free Clinical Practice Group (CPG) to expand our acute frailty pathway. This has included:
  • A front-door frailty service
  • A dedicated Acute Frailty Unit (Amber Ward)
  • Development of a Same Day Acute Frailty (SDAF) assessment area
  • A newly funded Geriatric Emergency Medicine Service (GEMS) offering 70 hours of specialist frailty input each week in the Emergency Department

Our inpatient services include four general geriatric wards and a high-performing Orthogeriatric team that consistently ranks in the top quartile of the National Hip Fracture Audit. We also deliver Geriatric Surgical Liaison and Onco-Geriatrics services and contribute to community care via the CHAT Team (Care Home Assessment Team)--a nationally recognised NHS England best practice model.
