Job summary
We are seeking a motivated, proactive, and self-directed Research Nurse or Clinical Trials Coordinator to join the Victor Phillip Dahdaleh Heart and Lung Research Institute (VPD-HLRI) Clinical Research Facility (CRF) and play a key role in delivering the POSITION study, part of the CG-TIC programme.

This is an exciting opportunity to contribute to innovative clinical research that aims to advance our understanding of respiratory disease while supporting the development of future healthcare interventions. The successful candidate will be responsible for identifying, recruiting, consenting, and supporting research participants, helping to ensure the successful delivery of high-quality, patient-centred research.

Based within the VPD-HLRI Clinical Research Facility, you will work across both the Heart and Lung Research Institute and Royal Papworth Hospital as part of a multidisciplinary research team. You will be involved in all aspects of study delivery, from participant recruitment and trial coordination through to data collection and study close-out.

Applicants should have experience supporting clinical research studies and working with patients in a clinical setting. A recognised clinical research qualification, such as Good Clinical Practice (GCP) certification, is desirable. Previous NHS experience and experience within a relevant specialty area would be advantageous.

You will be based at the VPD-HLRI and Royal Papworth Hospital on the Cambridge Biomedical Campus.

Main duties of the job
The post holder will be responsible for coordinating study activities, arranging and conducting participant visits, obtaining informed consent, collecting high-quality research data, and ensuring compliance with study protocols, regulatory requirements, and research governance standards. You will work closely with investigators, clinical teams, academic collaborators, sponsors, and external stakeholders to ensure the successful delivery of the study.

As a key member of the Research Team, you will be responsible for the delivery of the POSITION study at the VPD Heart and Lung Research Institute Clinical Research Facility and Royal Papworth Hospital.

This role offers a balance of collaborative team working and individual responsibility within a supportive and dynamic research environment. In addition to coordinating clinical trials, you will receive training and support to develop and maintain research-specific clinical competencies, including venepuncture, ECG recording, vital signs assessment, sample processing, and centrifugation.

The successful applicant will be part of the VPD-HLRI Clinical Research Facility (CRF) team undertaking trials within the Royal Papworth Hospital NHS Foundation Trust. You will liaise closely with HLRI-CRF team members, clinical trial delivery teams, and support R&D teams and study sponsor representatives. You will be expected to operate with minimum supervision in organising and planning your own workload.

Qualifications
Essential

• Professional adult nursing qualification and clinical knowledge acquired through training to diploma or degree level.
• PLUS post graduate learning or experience relevant to practice with demonstrable competence OR specialist knowledge across the range of work procedures and practices, underpinned by theoretical knowledge or relevant practical experience.
• Leadership/management training and/or experience.
• Registered with Nursing and Midwifery Council.

Experience
Essential

• Significant experience in field of own practice.
• Experience of managing or supervising staff and ability to mentor/educate junior staff.
• An understanding of clinical governance frameworks including Patient Safety Incident Response Framework (PSIRF), policy and procedure, audit and quality assurance.
• An understanding of safeguarding policies and procedures, particularly those related to vulnerable patients.
• Excellent communication and interpersonal skills with the ability to be able to problem solve, use own initiative and plan, organise and prioritise own and others' workload.
• Evidence of continuous professional development and a willingness to participate in further training and education.
• Competent IT skills.
