Job summary
We are seeking to appoint a Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon with a specialist interest in Knee and hip arthroplasty with a special interest in soft tissue knee / young adult surgery. The post holder will have a recognised fellowship in knee & hip surgery with experience in knee & hip arthroplasty. Multi-ligament and soft tissue reconstruction/ young adult hip would be desirable. Competence in general Orthopaedic trauma surgery is mandatory.

The post holder will participate in the general Orthopaedic on call rota, currently 1 in 12 weekends and 1 in 12 weekdays (every third Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, or Thursday) and support the general Orthopaedic trauma workload. Candidates for the appointment should have a genuine trauma interest and be willing to work alongside colleagues in the Orthopaedic and plastic surgical departments to support the increasing demand for complex ortho-plastic trauma surgery.

Main duties of the job
Working collaboratively with the other consultants and wider multidisciplinary Trauma & Orthopaedic team, the post-holder will:
  • Co-lead development of the soft tissue knee or young adult hip service, improving timely patient management and service resilience.
  • Participate in morning trauma meetings, sharing knowledge and contributing to senior decision-making.
  • Join the consultant on-call rota, taking responsibility for admitted patients and ensuring timely assessment, investigation, management and discharge.
  • Work with orthogeriatric and anaesthetic teams to optimise care for elderly hip/femur fracture patients and achieve NHFD best practice standards.
  • Undertake regular ward rounds, ensuring effective handover and cross-cover during planned absences.
  • Run weekly fracture and elective clinics, supporting increased new patient activity and appropriate follow-up reduction.
  • Undertake trauma and elective operating lists across main and day surgery theatres.
  • Support enhanced recovery, day-case arthroplasty and shorter hospital stays. Liaise with bookings teams to optimise theatre utilisation.
  • Provide GP advice via Cinapsis and contribute to the Virtual Fracture Clinic. Support implementation of professional standards and participate in arthroplasty meetings, NJR review, clinical governance and Morbidity & Mortality meetings.
  • Provide clinical leadership and support for junior doctors, nursing staff and the wider multidisciplinary team.

Qualifications
Essential
  • Possession / within 6 months of possession of CCT in Trauma & Orthopaedics
  • Full GMC registration with licence to practice

Experience / Clinical Skills
Essential
  • Evidence of wide experience and high level of competence in T&O.
  • Appropriate knowledge base and ability to apply sound clinical judgement to problems: demonstrates clear, logical thinking/analytical approach
  • Experience in managing risk. Knows when to seek help, able to prioritise clinical need
  • Knowledge and application of up-to-date evidence-based practice

Management Experience
Essential
  • Ability to perform effectively as a member of a multidisciplinary team.
  • Ability and willingness to work within the Trust and NHS performance targets.
  • Ability to balance individual requirements against those of the department / Division.
  • Commitment to active clinical governance and learning from errors.

Communication skills
Essential
  • Demonstrates clarity in written communication.
  • Always considers patients preference when discussing treatment options.

Teaching
Essential
  • Demonstration of an interest and commitment to teaching.
  • Ability to teach clinical skills to trainees and others.
  • Enthusiastic and able to inspire others.

Audit and Research
Essential
  • Experience in and commitment to clinical audit.
