Job summaryWe are looking to appoint a Whole time Specialty Doctor in Cardio-Thoracic Surgery to Sheffield Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust. The post will be to cover both Campuses, The Northern General Hospital & the Royal Hallamshire Hospital.
Applicants must have completed a minimum of four years' full-time postgraduate training (or the equivalent gained through part-time or flexible training), including at least two years in a recognised training programme within the relevant specialty or as a fixed-term specialty trainee. Equivalent experience and competencies gained outside a formal training programme will also be considered.
Any candidate who is unable for personal reasons to work full-time will be eligible to be considered for the post; if such a person is appointed, modification of the job content will be discussed on a personal basis with the Trust in consultation with consultant colleagues.

Main duties of the jobThe successful candidates have the opportunity to extend their experience in cardio-thoracic surgery, with the possibility to develop a sub-specialty interest in mitral, aortic or thoracic surgery.
They will be involved in undergraduate and postgraduate teaching, be involved in operating sessions, wards, ITU, OPD, MDT and research projects. The candidate will take part to the resident on-call rota for cardio-thoracic.
The specialty doctor will also participate in outpatient clinics and aortic MDTs where they will have the opportunity to engage with the multi-disciplinary teams of different hospitals.

Person SpecificationQualifications/ Experience/ Entry CriteriaEssential- Medical Degree from a recognised UK or overseas university or institution
- Basic medical Degree
- A minimum of 4 years full time postgraduate training (or equivalent gained on a part-time basis) at least 2 of which will be in a specialty training programme in Cardio-thoracic Surgery or as a fixed term specialty trainee in the specialty, or shall have equivalent experience and competencies
- Full registration with the General Medical Council with a licence to practice by date of application.
Desirable- Wider experience in different units
- MRCS or equivalent
Clinical experienceEssential- A minimum of 2 years in a specialty training programme in Cardiothoracic Surgery or as a fixed term specialty doctor in the specialty
- Experience as first assistant for cardio-thoracic procedures
- Management of pre-and post-operative patients
Desirable- Experience as first operator for cardio-thoracic procedures
Management and Clinical GovernanceEssential- Demonstrate and understanding of management & clinical governance issues
Audit/ResearchEssential- An understanding of the issues of clinical effectiveness and audit
- Ability to critically assess published research and incorporate it into clinical practice where appropriate
Desirable- Documented completed audits during training
TeachingEssential- Willingness and ability to teach undergraduate and postgraduate trainees
Personal AttributesEssential- Good written and oral communication skills
