Job summary
Torbay and South Devon Foundation Trust is offering the opportunity to combine a rewarding job in oncology with an unrivalled lifestyle in the heart of one of the most beautiful areas of the country.

We are looking to recruit two enthusiastic specialty doctors initially on a 12month fixed term contract with the possibility of the posts becoming substantive. The post holders will be responsible for delivering general internal medicine expertise on the oncology ward, and support the delivery of the acute oncology service across the trust through leading the development on an oncology day case emergency service (ODEC).

Candidates are not expected to have receivedspecialisttraininginoncology but shoulddemonstrateenthusiasmto deliver new ways of working to improve the quality of care offered to patients receiving cancer care at Torbay.

The post-holder will work closely with the wider oncology team,comprisingof consultant oncologists, specialist registrars, specialitydoctorsand the existing nurse led acute oncologyservice.We encourage post holdersto take an active role in research and development and toparticipatein the teaching programs of the department.

The successful applicant will join our Consultants based at Torbay Hospital; Dr Louise Medley, Dr Nicole Dorey, Dr Jonathan Chambers, Dr Naomi Cole, Dr Geoff Cogill, Dr Claire Dyke, Dr Victoria Cope, Dr Andy Goodman, Dr Anna Lydon, Dr Nangi Lo, Dr Tim Norris, Dr Kelly Rust and Dr Helen Saxby.

Main duties of the job
  • Work with the senior management team todevelop, implement, and evaluate new pathways ofsame daycare forpatients on active cancer treatments
  • Provide general medicineexpertiseon the oncology ward
  • Support shared decision making, advance care planning and discharge planningforin-patientson the oncology ward
  • Provide education and training on issues related to general medicine, multimorbidity and geriatric syndromes for the wider multidisciplinary cancer teams

Torbay and South Devon NHS Foundation Trust is an Integrated Care Organisation providing acute health care services from Torbay Hospital, community health services and adult social care. The Trust runs Torbay Hospital as well as five community hospitals, stretching from Dawlish to Brixham.

Torbay Hospital is a medium-sized, progressive and innovative District General Hospital providing acute services to South Devon with a 10-bedded Critical Care Unit, six general theatres, three orthopaedic theatres and a day surgery unit. We provide services in most specialties within Torbay but have close working relationships with Royal Devon University Healthcare (Exeter and North Devon) and University Hospitals Plymouth.

We have around 500,000 face-to-face contacts with patients in their homes and communities each year and see over 78,000 people in our A&E department annually. We serve a resident population of approximately 375,000 people, plus about 100,000 visitors at any one time during the summer holiday season.

We employ approximately 6,000 staff including frontline health and social care staff, such as nurses, occupational therapists, social workers, consultants, and physiotherapists who work in your home and from a range of different premises across Torbay and South Devon such as community hospitals and clinics. We also have over 800 volunteers who make a difference each and every day to the people we care for.

Job responsibilities
The post holder will workprimarily in thein-patient settinghowever there will be opportunities for developing an interest in the Non-Site Specific/Malignancy of Unknown Origin clinics.The main duties of the post will be to:

Person Specification
Qualifications and training
Essential
  • Medically qualified with the MRCP and working at ST3+ level
Desirable
  • Or equivalent competencies or experience

Specific skills
Essential
  • Experience of involving patients in decisions about their care
  • Experience of supporting resident doctors and junior medical staff
  • Prior experience in clinical audit, incident reporting and analysis and implementation of any new processes
  • Demonstrative experience of clinical guidelines and protocols being adhered to and supporting junior medical staff to ensure they are also adhering to any guidelines/protocols
Desirable
  • Experience working with medical, nursing and managerial colleagues to ensure high performance in the following areas; -Clinical efficiency ie; length of stay reductions -Quality of outcomes ie; reducing re-admission rates -Financial management ie; supporting in the identification, implementation and achievement of cost improvement programmes
  • Experience in providing support to the management team with junior doctor recruitment and inductions

Teaching/Research Experience
Essential
  • Experience of providing high quality teaching to medical undergraduates and members of other health care professions as required by the clinical director.
