Job summary
An exciting opportunity have arisen for staff looking to progress their career and become an Operational Team Leader (TL) in Portsmouth & South East Hampshire Sector of SCAS, this covers the Ambulance Resource Centres of North Harbour and Petersfield, with the base station being North Harbour.

The Team Leader role is a pivotal position in the support, management, and development of the area's existing operational staff of all grades and visiting students. You will become a key player as part of the area management team that will help to demonstrate and champion the behaviours linked to the key values of: Caring, Professional and Honest.

This is an exciting opportunity to lead a team of professionals using your leadership competencies and behaviours. To be successful as a Team Leader, you will need to demonstrate that you can support your team fully and enable them to provide outstanding patient care within the urgent and emergency care setting.

You will develop into leading teams both as a line manager but also as an Operational Commander, working in the field to deliver the JESIP doctrine at complex incidents.

Main duties of the job
The Team Leader will, under the direction of their direct line manager being either the sectors' Operations Manager or the Clinical Operations Manager, be responsible for the management of their designated team, working closely with their Clinical Team Educator to fulfill the strategic aims of the Trust.

You must be a team player, accept responsibility, demonstrate accountability and be a confident decision maker. You will possess good interpersonal skills and communications skills. You will need to be competent in basic IT skills and capable of logical thinking, practical problem-solving, objective assessment skills and report writing.

The Team Leader will support the Head of Operations, Clinical Operations Manager and Operations Manager in the realisation of the Trust's Strategies, Vision, Behaviours and Values, supporting the delivery of high-quality patient focused care, in a safe and sustainable way, within the wider organisation.

The Team leader will be responsible to ensure that the immediate welfare of staff remains at the forefront of all their daily service delivery, and as such will supply immediate support to the staff within the wider operational teams.

Corporate Induction
It's really important for us to ensure you have the best onboarding experience which allows you to feel a sense of belonging from the start. To help with this, we will book your Corporate Induction as soon as we possibly can (depending on availability).

All new starters need to attend our *Corporate Induction in person, this is held over one and half days from our educational centres based in: Newbury (Berkshire), Bicester (Oxfordshire) or Whiteley (Hampshire). More specific details will be sent to you once your start date has been confirmed.

*Please note - depending on your role additional training may be required following on from your corporate induction.

Note: you will need to meet the essential criteria as a minimum in order for your application to be shortlisted. You must have completed your Consolidation of Learning Portfolio as part of the NQP programme and have demonstrable experience of working as a Paramedic.

Internal candidates must have the full support of their current line management (for front line operational staff this is expected to be your Team Leader and Clinical Operations Manager/Operations Manager). The required managers nomination form is attached to the documents section of this advertisement. This form must be submitted to opsrecruitment@scas.nhs.uk by the closing date of this vacancy.

The essential criteria within this nomination form will form part of the essential criteria for the longlisting / shortlisting process - and all elements must to be met.

It is the candidates responsibility to secure this nomination form in good time and should work with their local managers to ensure this form is submitted ahead by the deadline. It is a reasonable expectation that candidates are making this request to their endorsing managers no later than 5 working days prior to the advertised deadline. Any extenuating circumstances which will cause a delay to this must be escalated to the Recruiting Manager and the Recruitment Team ahead of the 5 working day deadline. A nomination form submitted to their local nominating managers with less than 5 working days for consideration, and subsequently is not completed by the requested endorsing manager, will not be considered for exceptional circumstances.

Applications submitted without a fully completed nomination form, or without managers endorsement, will be rejected at longlisting, meaning your application will not be reviewed for shortlisting.

Assessment Process
All applicants for this position will be required to undergo a competitive selection process involving a panel interview including a presentation and also an assessment paper (MCQ and short answer - Command/People Promise/JLC, etc).

Interview Dates are expected to be : 5th and 6th October 2026.

If you registered with HCPC after Sept 2016 we will be requesting evidence that you have practiced operationally and completed the 2 year NHS NQP programme. This evidence will be requested during the recruitment process should your application be successful.

Candidates who successfully pass the interview and assessment, but do not secure a position will be added to a talent pool reserve list for 6 months. If a vacancy arises within the same sector (Portsmouth & South East Hampshire) within this time, positions can be offered to candidates on the reserve list. These may include permanent, secondment or development opportunities, enabling them to demonstrate their suitability for a role before progressing to a substantive position.

Person Specification
Qualifications
Essential
  • Evidence of on-going professional development.
  • Formal Leadership qualification or demonstrable level of experience.
  • Registered HCPC Paramedic or RGN Nurse with demonstrable experience (2 years post registration experience including preceptorship training and Newly Qualified Paramedic (NQP) period).
  • IHCD or FutureQuals Emergency Response Driving qualification

Desirable
  • Operational commanders course (NARU or equivalent)
  • Relevant clinical qualification in emergency care.

Knowledge
Essential
  • Leadership / Management experience in an operational function.
  • Experience of objective setting and performance management
  • Experience in analysing data and delivering presentations based on the information
  • Understanding of NHS developments and their impact on the Trust, together with knowledge of locality based decision makers and influencing bodies.
  • Knowledge of the challenges facing health and social care.

Desirable
  • Experience of leading / managing of change programmes within their area or expertise
  • Experience of working with stakeholders across the healthcare economy
  • Budget management experience
