Job summaryThe Band 7 Specialist Nurse for Pain Services will provide expert clinical leadership and specialist nursing care for patients with acute, chronic and complex pain conditions across University Hospitals Tees (UHT). The post holder will function as an autonomous practitioner, undertaking advanced pain assessment, formulating and implementing evidence-based pain management plans, and delivering nurse-led services across inpatient, outpatient and community settings.
The post holder will lead service development, quality improvement, education, audit and research activities within Pain Services, whilst providing professional and clinical leadership to nursing and multidisciplinary colleagues. They will act as a key resource for pain management across UHT, ensuring delivery of safe, effective, patient-centred care that supports excellent patient outcomes and aligns with national standards and organisational priorities.
Main duties of the jobThe Pain Services across UHT provides multiple cross site services to help support patients who have
- Long-term (chronic) pain lasting months or years
- Back and neck pain
- Nerve pain
- Joint and musculoskeletal pain
- Pain after surgery
- Complex pain conditions that affect day-to-day life

- Degree/diploma in Nursing plus specialist training to master's level
- Physical Assessment Skills
- Demonstrable experience in management, including direct line management responsibility
- Non-Medical Prescribing to work towards
ExperienceEssential- Significant post-registration experience at Band 6 level or equivalent
- Experience working within Pain Management, Palliative Care, Anaesthetics, Neurosciences, Rheumatology, or related specialties.
- Evidence of managing patients with complex pain conditions
- Experience of multidisciplinary team working
- Experience of service development and quality improvement
Desirable- Research and audit experience.
Knowledge & SkillsEssential- Evidence of ongoing professional, academic and clinical development
- Advanced knowledge of acute and chronic pain management, including analgesic pharmacology, medicines optimisation and the biopsychosocial model of care.
- Comprehensive understanding of clinical governance, safeguarding, risk management, audit, research and evidence-based practice.
- Knowledge of national pain management guidance, quality standards and quality improvement methodologies.
- Excellent clinical assessment, analytical and decision-making skills, with the ability to manage complex caseloads autonomously
- Demonstrates the ability to work independently whilst providing professional leadership and support to the wider multidisciplinary team.
