CLINICAL NURSE SPECIALIST IN PAIN MANAGEMENT AND LEAD NURSE IN CHRONIC PAIN
Band 7 - Permanent
37.5 Hours Per Week - Full Time

An opportunity has arisen for a Clinical Nurse Specialist for Pain Management and Lead Nurse in Chronic Pain at Russells Hall Hospital.

The successful candidate must be registered with the Nursing & Midwifery Council, and be in possession of a teaching qualification e.g. SLAIP and be committed to delivering support and guidance to both inpatients and outpatients with regards to their pain management. The post holder will provide a key role in the delivery of Pain Management Services throughout the Trust. They will work within a multidisciplinary team within ward-based inpatients, out-patient clinics and pain management programmes.

The post holder will be actively involved in delivery of pain management in both an inpatient and outpatient setting. The successful candidate must have a good knowledge of chronic pain conditions and its effect on Acute Pain is essential and they must have current experience in managing a team of staff and other resources.

Main duties of the job

• To lead and support the pain management service covering both outpatient and inpatient areas.
• To support delivery of specialist and skilled care of patients with acute and persistent pain demonstrating quality and expertise in all aspects of patient care reflective of the Trust objectives, vision and values.
• Lead the development of nursing practice in effective outpatient Pain Management, with the aim of improving and maintaining the quality of pain management through strategic planning, implementation and evaluation of the service.
• In collaboration with other members of the team and other key staff, the post holder will contribute to the day-to-day management of the service.
• At all times the practitioner will act as an advocate for patients and families, and will be a frontline advocate for the Trust.
• To provide clinical and professional leadership for the Pain service team ensuring that high standards of clinical practice are adhered to at all times.
• The practitioner will have extensive knowledge of pain management and be actively involved in the teaching and assessing of junior staff.
• The practitioner will be responsible for their own professional conduct in line with NMC or HCPC codes of conduct and will adhere to and understand all Trust and local policies and procedures.The practitioner will continue their own personal and professional development.
• The practitioner will participate in providing a 7-day pain service.

Qualifications & Education
Essential

• NMC or HCPC Registration
• Registered Nurse *First degree or equivalent knowledge, skills and competency gained through significant post registration experience
• Evidence of ongoing professional development in relevant areas of speciality
• Evidence of professional development and regular study since qualification

Desirable

• Evidence of undertaking a recognised course of study in teaching and assessing
• Non-medical prescriber or willingness to complete Cannulation course

Knowledge & Training
Essential

• Effective leadership skills and an understanding of leadership theory and practice
• Knowledge and skill of working in an outpatient and inpatient setting
• Knowledge of current clinical development, evidence-based practices and professional issues affecting pain management services. Maintenance of clinical competence

Experience

• Experience of close liaison with members of multidisciplinary team
• Experience of managing critically ill patients/recognising deteriorating patients
• Current experience in managing a team of staff and other resources
• Ability to understand and utilise clinical evidence as a specialist practitioner
• Able to undertake IV drug administration
• Excellent IT literacy skills and working with Microsoft Office
