Job summary
We are seeking an enthusiastic and forward thinking Consultant in Community Sexual and Reproductive Health to join our Newcastle Sexual Health Service.

This is an exciting opportunity to be part of an established level three service, providing integrated Sexual Health Services across Newcastle. Working within a skilled multidisciplinary team, you will play a key role in delivering high quality patient centred care developing innovative pathways and helping shape the future direction of Sexual Health Services within the city. The service is currently undergoing transformation and workforce development including recruitment of consultant medical leadership roles.

We are looking for an individual who is passionate about delivering excellent clinical care, improving access to services, reducing inequalities and supporting the development of an Integrated Sexual Health model that meets the needs of our diverse population.

Main duties of the job
  • Provide Clinical Leadership in Community Sexual and Reproductive Health
  • Deliver consultant led sexual and reproductive healthcare clinics.
  • Provide complex contraceptive advice and management.
  • Undertake insertion and removal of intrauterine contraception and contraceptive implants, including complex intrauterine contraception insertion and removal and deep implant procedures under ultrasound guidance
  • Manage complex contraceptive cases including women with medical comorbidities.
  • Support menopause and reproductive health pathways where required.
  • Participate in safeguarding pathways.
  • Work collaboratively across primary, community and secondary care services.
  • Contribute to health promotion and prevention initiatives.
  • Provide specialist advice to healthcare professionals.

Job responsibilities
The successful applicant will provide consultant leadership in Contraception and Sexual and Reproductive Health, supporting delivery of high-quality community and specialist sexual and reproductive healthcare services in Newcastle. As well as contributing to the strategic development of sexual health services and regional specialist networks.

Qualifications
Essential
  • Primary medical qualification
  • Full GMC registration
  • Entry onto the GMC Specialist Register for Community Sexual and Reproductive Health or eligibility for entry within six months of the date of the AAC [there is flexibility with the 6-month period with Executive Medical Director approval]
  • Membership of the College of Sexual and Reproductive Health (MCSRH) or equivalent
  • Letter of Competency for Intrauterine Techniques (LoC IUT)
  • Letter of Competency for Sub-Dermal Implants (LoC SDI)

Desirable
  • Higher Degree (MD, PhD, MSc)
  • Postgraduate qualification in Medical Education
  • Experience of working in the NHS
  • MRCP/MRCOG
  • DIP GUM

  • Evidence of understanding of and adherence to principles of Good Medical Practice set out by the GMC

Clinical Experience
Essential
  • Broad experience in Sexual and Reproductive Healthcare
  • Ability to independently manage complex contraceptive care
  • Experience of insertion and removal of LARC methods
  • Competent in complex IUD procedures
  • Competent in transvaginal ultrasound for localisation of intrauterine devices
  • Competent in removing deep implants under ultrasound guidance
  • Good history & examination skills.
  • Independent practice running GUM clinics
  • Experience of safeguarding practice
  • Experience delivering consultant-led outpatient care
  • Demonstrate an interest in the sexual health needs of a diverse local population.

Desirable
  • Experience of service redesign
  • Menopause Service Experience
  • Experience in delivering community gynaecology clinics
  • Experience managing complex GUM clinics

Management and administrative experience
Essential
  • Understanding of the NHS, Clinical Governance process and resource issues
  • Evidence of organisational, management and time management skills

Desirable
  • Evidence of management and administration experience and understanding management goals
  • Management course and / or certificate

Teaching and education
Essential
  • Evidence of maintaining CoSRH registered trainer certification
  • Experience of supervising resident medical staff
  • Experience of participation in undergraduate and postgraduate teaching
  • Ability to teach clinical / technical / practical skills

Desirable
  • Qualification in medical education

Audit and Research
Essential
  • Ability to apply research outcomes to clinical practice
  • Involvement in quality improvement measures
  • Ability to undertake multi-disciplinary audit / audit in specialty area
  • Good presentation skills
  • Experience of clinical research

Desirable
  • Undertaken research with published papers in refereed journals
