Job summaryWe are looking for Emergency Medicine Consultant with sub-speciality training in Pre-Hospital Emergency Medicine.
The applicant will be joining a friendly and supportive team of consultants working on an annualised rota to provide the full spectrum of Emergency Care for adult and paediatric patients at South Tyneside and Sunderland Foundation Trust (STSFT).
You will work across our Emergency Departments at Sunderland Royal Hospital and South Tyneside District Hospital. Both sites are busy acute hospitals. You will be supported by a dynamic and highly motivated Nursing team, an inspiring cadre of training and career grade Doctors, Emergency Clinical Practitioners Physician Associates, Advanced Clinical Practitioners and a range of in-patient acute specialties.
Main duties of the jobReception, resuscitation, diagnosis and initial treatment of all emergencies as appropriate.
Referral of patients to other specialities, transfer of patients for admission to assessment units, to other hospitals within or outside the Trust, referral as outpatient or back to the community.
Provide high quality consultant delivered care to patients including clinical leadership and supervision of junior medical staff, ensuring the highest standards of clinical care are provided to all patients.
Be proactive in ensuring that all patients receive rapid assessment, treatment and clinical decision making, whilst ensuring that the Clinical Quality Indicators to deliver safe quality and performance are delivered and sustained.
Work in conjunction with the nurse co-ordinator and medical and surgical colleagues to ensure that there is effective and timely communication between the clinical team; timely intervention and safe care to maintain optimal patient flow.
When colleagues are absent alternative clinical duties may be arranged to provide appropriate cover.
Provide teaching and training at undergraduate and postgraduate level and supervise and train the junior and speciality doctors in Emergency Medicine, advanced nurse practitioners and emergency nurse practitioners. The post is designed to support the Pre-Hospital Emergency Medicine training profile of the unit.

Job responsibilitiesThe Emergency Care directorate includes Emergency Medicine & Acute Medicine across the South Tyneside and Sunderland Sites
There are two busy EDs both with adjacent admission units and Same Day Emergency Care Units. Clinical assessment is by a team of medical staff and emergency nurse practitioners under the direction of an Acute Physician. Additional in-reach to the Admission Units is provided by specialties. ED admit to the admission units after verbal handover. There are fast-track options to ambulatory care and admission units after rapid consultant assessment. A number of ambulatory pathways are in place and will be expanded under the Safe and Sustainable Emergency Care programme.
GPs access EAU through the GP assessment area. Recruitment to expand Acute Medicine consultant numbers is underway.
ED access to the Coronary Care Unit and Angiography is through the Consultant Cardiologist. Access to the Chest Pain Assessment Unit is via the Cardiology Nurse Practitioners
Person SpecificationSkills & Knowledge- Commitment to continuing personal and professional development.
- An ability to build/maintain relationships and work effectively in a team.
- An ability to set standards and manage performance.
Desirable- Evidence of academic research and publication in peer-reviewed journals.
Qualifications- Hold a CCT and be on the GMCs Specialist Register, or be within 6 months of being admitted to the GMCs Specialist Register. As defined in the FRCEM qualification leading to the award of a CCT.
Desirable- Diploma/Masters degree relevant to the delivery of Emergency Care.
Experience- Effective self-management.
- Effective written and verbal communication skills
Desirable- A track record of initiating or developing services within the NHS.
- Training and development of medical and nursing staff, including advanced life support courses.
