Job summaryApplications are invited for the post of Locum Consultant in Paediatric Emergency Medicine at Sunderland Royal Hospital. This is an exciting opportunity to join a dynamic, experienced and supportive team, contributing to the ongoing development of a high-quality Paediatric Emergency Medicine (PEM) service within South Tyneside and Sunderland NHS Foundation Trust.
We are seeking a clinician with a Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT), or equivalent, in Paediatrics, together with subspecialty training in PEM, or evidence of equivalent skills and experience gained following CCT. The successful candidate will be based in the Paediatric Emergency Department (PED), providing specialist emergency care for children and young people across the region.
The post is part of an established consultant workforce and is key to maintaining safe, sustainable and consultant-led care. The successful applicant will deliver high-quality clinical care, support timely senior decision-making and contribute to service development and patient pathway improvement. The role also includes responsibilities for education, training, clinical governance and supervision of junior doctors and multidisciplinary team members
Main duties of the jobThe successful candidate will deliver a high-quality, consultant-led Paediatric Emergency Medicine service, providing expert assessment, diagnosis and management of children and young people presenting with acuteillness and injury. Working within a busy Paediatric Emergency Department, they will support senior decision-making, deliver evidence-based care and contribute to excellent patient outcomes and experience.
The postholder will assess and manage emergency presentations, coordinating referrals to specialties, inpatient teams, community services and tertiary centres as required, ensuring effective, patient-centred care pathways through collaborative multidisciplinary working.
As a senior clinician, they will provide leadership, supervision and support to junior doctors and the wider multidisciplinary team, promoting learning, quality improvement and continuous development. They will work with colleagues across the Trust to support safe, effective care and efficient patient flow.
The role includes maintaining Clinical Quality Indicators and contributing to clinical governance, audit and quality improvement activities to enhance patient safety and service performance. The postholder will also support teaching and mentorship of undergraduate and postgraduate learners, including medical trainees, ACPs, ANPs and ENPs, and participate in research, POCUS development and flexible consultant team working, including cross-cover arrangements.

The post holder will join the existing team of consultants and will participate in the on-call rota.
Overall responsibilities include contributing to the co-ordination and delivery of the strategic and operational aspects of the service across the South Tyneside and Sunderland area. These will reflect national and local priorities including the strategic direction of South Tyneside and Sunderland NHS Foundation Trust and the Division of Family Care. The post holder is expected to possess Membership of the Royal College of Paediatrics & Child Health and have undertaken subspecialty training in Paediatric Emergency Medicine (or to be able to demonstrate equivalent training post CCT) and to be on the GMC Specialist Register at the time of taking up the post.
Satisfactory job plan and annual appraisal is essential. The post holder will be expected to develop the service in keeping with local, regional, and national guidance.
Mandatory training compliance is required.
Person SpecificationAudit & ResearchEssential- Ability to apply research outcomes to clinical practice.
- Involvement in quality improvement measures.
- Ability to undertake multi-disciplinary audit / audit in specialty area
- Experience of clinical research
Desirable- Undertaken research with published papers in refereed journals
QualificationsEssential- Primary medical qualification.
- Full GMC registration.
- Entry onto the GMC Specialist Register or eligibility for entry within six months of the date of the AAC [there is flexibility with the 6-month period with Executive Medical Director approval].
- RCPCH Membership or RCEM Membership.
- CCT (or equivalent) in Paediatrics with subspecialty training in Paediatric Emergency Medicine (or to be able to demonstrate equivalent training post CCT) or CCT (or equivalent) in Emergency Medicine with subspecialty training in Paediatric Emergency Medicine (or to be able to demonstrate equivalent training post CCT)
Desirable- Higher professional degree, MD, PhD or equivalent.
- Fellowship in the area of subspeciality interest
- Management course and / or certificate
- Qualification in medical education
ExperienceEssential- Experience of supervising junior medical staff
- Experience of participation in undergraduate and postgraduate teaching
Desirable- Evidence of prior PED experience at a senior level
- Evidence of management and administration experience and understanding management goals
