The job: making high quality mental health support more accessible
About the companySpill’s mission is to reduce unnecessary emotional pain by making high quality mental health support easily accessible.
Our product is bought by businesses and their employees can book free therapy sessions (we recently delivered our 100,000th free session). We are bought by companies in industries ranging from tech and media to hospitality and construction. On the company itself, we operate with an intentionally small HQ team of 6 full-time employees (2 software engineers).
Despite the small headcount, our goals for the coming years are punchy - hopefully we aren’t waiting too long for our millionth free session - and we are really serious about achieving them. You can read our company handbook
here to get a fuller sense of how we plan to go about it.
About the roleThe primary purpose of this role is to develop software that either enables Spill to work with more companies, or lowers the cost of providing Spill. You will fulfil that role by working within a cross-functional team to develop new features and functionality for our product.
In terms of where you'll be spending your time, around 60% of your working day will be “traditional” full-stack engineering tasks like coding features and writing tests. The remaining 40% will involve work like product planning, ideating about solutions, understanding user context, collaborating with stakeholders across the business, and measuring the impact of your work.
You’ll usually work as part of a cross-functional product and engineering team, but you will also spend time driving projects forward on your own.
Example projects you might work on- Allow employees to have phone sessions rather than video sessions, meaning building the infrastructure for counsellors to have calls with employees without using their personal phone numbers
- Building a layer of abstraction on top of all our features to allow us to easily create pricing plans for customers that come with a custom feature set
- Build a dashboard for our clinical team to easily triage our high-risk intake forms in order to flag people who need urgent attention to our safeguarding leads
Tech StackOur tech stack:
- NodeJS, TypeScript
- React
- PostgreSQL
- GraphQL
- AWS, GitHub Actions, Pulumi
RequirementsYou’ve got a good grasp of computer science fundamentals - either from a computer science degree or experience.
You’ve worked with both frontend and backend, and lean more towards the backend (roughly 70% of your work will be backend and 30% frontend)
Professional software engineering experience:
For the Senior (Level 1) role we’re looking for 5+ years of professional software engineering experience with 2+ years working within a scale-up technology company on a high-performing team
For the Senior (Level 2) role we’re looking for 7+ years of professional software engineering experience with 2+ years working within a scale-up technology company on a high-performing team
That said, we recognise that experience will vary a lot between people, so please don't be put off if you don't meet these criteria exactly. We care about outcomes rather than tickbox criteria, and it's often the case that the perfect person for the role has a CV that looks a little different. Research (by Harvard University) shows that women are particularly likely to second-guess themselves and not apply — so if you're worried you don't meet all the criteria, get in touch anyhow and let us do the worrying.
Note that we don’t require any previous experience working with this tech stack for the role. We are language agnostic during the hiring process.
How to applyBefore applying, please first read our company handbook cover to cover to make sure that you’re really interested in the company and what we’re doing. If you’d then like to be considered for the the role, send your CV to calvin@spill.chat
