Job summary
We are particularly keen to hear from individuals with interests in Inflammatory Bowel Disease, colon cancer and pelvic floor surgery, to assist delivery of the increasing regional workload, including collaboration with other NE Colorectal units. There are potential mentorship and training opportunities for new consultants and considerable flexibility within the department to support the appointment of the very best candidates.

An immediate opportunity has arisen for two Colorectal Consultant appointments, one with a specific interest in Inflammatory Bowel Disease and Benign Colorectal Surgery and a second Colorectal Consultant post, for candidates with sub-specialty interests to support planned areas of expansion including: colon cancer, pelvic floor surgery, abdominal wall reconstruction and proctology services.

Candidates for the post must be registered medical practitioners and on, or eligible to join, the Specialist Register within six months of the date of the Appointments Committee

Main duties of the job
The candidates will be expected to participate in the EGS rota which is currently 1:13 but will likely move to 1:16 following consultant expansion of posts in UGI/EGS. The rota includes a commitment to cover the Major Trauma Centre at the RVI and in-house support/mentorship/further training in trauma care is also readily available as required. Additional posts will enable support for a new reconfiguration of the EGS service aimed to provide the highest quality, continuous specialist and colorectal surgical input for the EGS.

Job responsibilities
Clinical:

• Provide high quality elective and emergency surgical care to the people of Newcastle and the wider NE
• Further develop sub-speciality services as part of a multidisciplinary team

Administrative:

• Provide timely communication to the wider team in hospital and the community
• Contribute to the efficient running of elective and acute care. Engage with national audits (NELA, NBOCAP, IMPACT etc)

Research:

• Engage with research activities in the department and sit within Newcastle Centre for Bowel Diseases
• Provide leadership in supporting medical students and doctors in training deliver research projects

Teaching:

• The department leads many educational programs and teaching is an important part of this role
• Opportunities to lead/further develop courses are numerous via the Newcastle Surgical Training Centre (NSTC)

Flexibility:

• In line with the Trusts core value of placing patients at the heart of everything we do, we are developing our service provision to be responsive to the needs of our patients. To meet those needs some staff groups will be increasingly asked to work a more flexible work pattern so that they can offer services in the evening or weekend. As a result any offer of employment to a consultant post will be subject to you agreeing to work a new more flexible pattern or working in the future if required, including evening and weekend work.

Education, Qualifications and Specialist Skills
Essential

• Primary Medical Qualification
• Full GMC Registration
• Entry onto the GMC Specialist Register (within 6 months from the date of the AAC).
• FRCS in General Surgery

Desirable

• Higher Degree.
• JAG accreditation in colonoscopy

Clinical Experience
Essential

• Evidence of experience in the specialty.
• Evidence of a substantial commitment to the specialty
• Ability to offer an expert clinical opinion within the speciality
• Ability to take independent responsibility for the clinical care of patients referred to a tertiary centre.

Desirable

• Additional training/skills in one of the following areas -IBD -Pelvic floor disorders -Complex proctology -Colon cancer -Abdominal wall reconstruction
