The post holder will provide a diagnostic neurophysiology service and will be able to develop a special interest in their chosen field. While hosted within the directorate of neurosciences, this is a shared post incorporating five dedicated PAs provided by North Cumbria Integrated Care (NCIC) NHS Foundation Trust to deliver clinical services at Penrith Hospital. Main duties of the jobThis is a shared post between The Departments of Neurophysiology at the Royal Victoria Infirmary in Newcastle and North Cumbria Integrated Care. This role will offer the successful candidate a varied job role working with both the local service in North Cumbria as well as the tertiary provider in NuTH.
The post holder will provide diagnostic neurophysiology services and will be able to develop a special interest in their chosen field. While hosted within the directorate of neurosciences, this post incorporates three dedicated PAs for contribution to the Highly Specialised Services for Rare Neuromuscular Diseases

Job responsibilitiesThe Department of Neurophysiology at the Royal Victoria Infirmary, Newcastle is one of the foremost in the country, with a prominent national and international profile and very active research environment. The department provides a diagnostic neurophysiology service to the clinicians within the Trust. Tertiary neurophysiology services are also provided to clinicians across the Northern Region. The department is actively involved in delivery of an epilepsy service, including the regional epilepsy surgery programme. The department works closely with the Department of Neurosurgery to provide highly specialist intra-operative neurophysiological monitoring.
Person SpecificationEducation, Qualifications and Specialist SkillsEssential- Primary Medical Qualification.
- Full GMC Registration.
- Entry onto the GMC Specialist Register, (or for UK trainees entry expected within 6 months from the date of the AAC.
- MRCP or equivalent
DesirableClinical ExperienceEssential- At least 4 years' training in clinical neurophysiology and achieving independent practice.
- Ability to offer expert clinical opinion in neurophysiology.
- The ability to perform and report on neurophysiological examinations, both adult and paediatric.
- Knowledge and experience in quantitative EMG.
- Knowledge and experience in neonatal and paediatric EEG.
- Knowledge and experience in Video-EEG Telemetry.
- Knowledge and experience in Stereo-EEG/Epilepsy surgery.
- Intraoperative neuro-monitoring (IONM)
Desirable- Specialist skills to compliment those of other staff.
- Enthusiasm to develop new services
- Knowledge and experience in specialised NCS/EMG is desirable, particularly the neurophysiology of movement disorders.
- Knowledge and experience in Paediatric NCS / EMG.
- Experience in neuro-muscular ultrasound.
- Experience of epilepsy clinics and managing patients with epilepsy
- Experience in magneto-encephalography (MEG)
Management and Administration ExperienceEssential- Involvement with management and project leadership within the specialty.
- Evidence of involvement in authoring or reviewing clinical guidelines.
- An understanding of Clinical Governance.
- Involvement in service improvement and development in neurophysiology (basic electrodiagnostic services and highly specialist services).
Desirable- Proven management and administrative experience and understanding of management goals.
- Evidence of leadership / project management.
- Evidence of having implemented change.
- Experience in developing and implementing new technologies.
TeachingEssential- Experience of supervising junior medical staff.
- Experience of participation in undergraduate and postgraduate teaching.
- Ability to teach clinical / technical / practical skills.
Desirable- Attendance at courses to develop teaching skills.
- Postgraduate qualification in medical education.
ResearchEssential- Evidence of involvement in and understanding of research methodology and publication of findings.
- Research/critical review of literature.
- Publications in the last five years.
Desirable- Higher degree.
- Evidence of success in attracting and managing research grants
AuditEssential- Evidence of participation in audit.
Desirable- Evidence of having changed practice as a result of audit.
- Evidence of having revisited the audit to assess improvement.
