Job summary
The Senior Pacing Physiologist (Band 6) is an experienced cardiac physiologist responsible for the delivery of a comprehensive pacing service, including the assessment, followup, and optimisation of patients with implanted cardiac rhythm management devices. The post holder works autonomously within their scope of practice, providing expert clinical care while supporting service development, governance, and the training of junior staff.

The role involves close collaboration with cardiology consultants, heart failure teams, catheter lab staff, and multidisciplinary colleagues to ensure safe, effective, and patientcentred care. The post holder is expected to contribute to quality improvement, service innovation, and the maintenance of high clinical standards.

Main duties of the job
  • Independently analyse and report ambulatory ECG recordings, event monitors, BP monitors, and ILRs
  • Perform and report a range of cardiac diagnostic investigations, including exercise tolerance tests, haemodynamic monitoring in the cath lab, pacemaker followup, and device implantation support
  • Undertake complex device followups following appropriate training and supervision
  • Perform transthoracic echocardiography and provide accurate reports once fully competent
  • Interpret, document, and present findings in line with local and national guidelines
  • Use relevant patient administration and cardiology IT systems (e.g. Alexhealth, CRIS)
  • Support service delivery through flexibility, including crosssite cover when required
  • Contribute to training, supervision, and development of junior staff and trainees
  • Support protocol development, research activity, and clinical governance
  • Maintain equipment, a safe working environment, and personal professional development

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
  • To independently analyse 24 hour (or longer) ECG recordings using Pathfinder Digital or Pathfinder SL and provide accurate factual reports
  • To independently analyse Event Monitor and BP monitors and provide accurate reports
  • To lead Exercise Tolerance tests assisted by more junior staff
  • To independently perform Haemodynamic monitoring in the Cardiac Catheterisation Laboratory
  • Download, interpret and report ILRs
  • Perform Pacemaker follow up and provide technical support during device implantation. Make adjustments based on findings as appropriate or as directed by the pacing consultant.
  • After a period of training and supervision to perform complex device follow ups. Make adjustments based on findings as appropriate or as directed by the pacing consultant.
  • Independently perform Transthoracic Echocardiography and provide an accurate report following training and with a period of supervision, once all other competencies are completed
  • Interpret and present findings and outcomes of all diagnostic procedures undertaken
  • Work within local and national guidelines and directives ie NICE etc
  • To use the Hospital Patient Administration system (Cosmic).
  • To use the Cardiology patient management system (CRIS).
  • To maintain a clean working environment.
  • To be flexible to provide cover at other sites in the case of unexpected absence.
  • Assist as required with research projects undertaken.
  • Contribute to and support the learning and development of others in the performance and technique of tests performed within the department.
  • Actively participate in the training of trainees and other staff.
  • Supervision of Assistant Technical Officers and trainee Cardiac Physiologists who are involved in the provision of Cardiology services
  • Assist in the development of protocols for cardiac investigations
  • Identify own training needs and maintain own skill development and mandatory training.
  • Ensure equipment is maintained and checked as per departmental protocols, report any faults to medical electronics following Trust procedure & provide staff with the necessary information about any equipment used in the department.

Person Specification
Qualifications
Essential
  • Cardiac Physiology Degree or equivalent. (BTEC/HTEC)

Desirable
  • BSE accreditation / IBHRE
  • ILS training
  • Registration with RCCP/AHCS

Experience
Essential
  • Previous experience of independently performing ECGS, Exercise Stress Tests, Holter monitoring and analysis, Cardiac Catheterisation/IABP, Devices, Pacemaker and ICD implant and follow up.
  • Evidence of continued professional development

Desirable
  • Experience of supervision and training of junior staff
